Just finished.

shyt was fantastic. All the Bloods were on point, but Delroy Lindo killed.

That reviewer is a clown cake though. Read the review on the strength of the tweet. She struggles with the fact that Paul is a Trump supporting Black man, like one of the biggest pop stars on the planet hasn't been pulling the exact same schtick for years. :why:The motherfukkers exist - we always think twice about inviting them to functions - but the motherfukkers exist.

She also says she's a comedian - the amount of comedy podcasts I've listened to over the years and I've never heard of her. Old girl must be super trash :wow:

From her tweets, she's way more excited about Bill Burr's projects dropping today, anyway, so make of that what you will. Someone should tell her that even with her 2 cents - Da 5 Bloods is still better reviewed across the board than 'King Of Staten Island' too.:sas2:

I thought this was actually kinda disappointing.

Delroy gave a masterful performance, especially the soliloquy. I also liked how the historical photos/asides were interwoven into the narrative. But apart from that, it seems undercooked and rushed. I think the sappy score (not the soundtrack, loved the Marvin) made it seem like a fake movie at times.

The whole subplot with the white landmine people and the love interest was really stupid.

The whole subplot with Jean Reno turning on them for the gold was weak.

The whole subplot with the Vietnamese daughter was really thrown together and barely given any care.

Chadwick was really good, but he was in the film for like 4 minutes.

While I appreciated they gave some agency to the Vietnamese perspective with the Calley reference, I don't think they really grappled with the War sufficiently.

I think Miracle at St. Anna was a far superior film.

A family friend, Emory Douglas, did the art for this movie. He was the Minister of Culture for the BPP back in the day. Nice to see him getting some mainstream shine.

This is a book of his art along with tons of info about the BPP, that Spike had him sign at the end of that video. One of my most cherished possessions. I always recommend it to folks, but I think it may be out of print because the lowest price I'm finding it online now is over $650. I remember being able to find the paperback on amazon for ~$20 when it was still available. If anyone ever goes to a BPP museum exhibit, check out the gift shop because the last one I went to that featured him also had his book for sale there. The hard cover I got is only $35, which is an absolute bargain.

Starkset...
They couldn't find younger actors or cgi these dudes:mjtf:

Acting was great everything else was horrible though

Lol
at first I thought he was taking liberties with the directing and the Bloods would be narrating the flashbacks fazing themselves in and out but nope... it is distracting to be honest

I was afraid to sound like the idiot, but I was REALLY confused during the first flashback, because they were the same actors, but they threw in Chadwick, and I was:

:wtf:

I thought this was a vacation. Why are they holding guns, and being shot at? Is this a tour excursion to be a part of a war reenactment?

Then I thought the flashbacks were hallucinations. I’m an hour in. I was about to head over to wiki to attempt to read the plot.

Just finished it and it was just ok to me. Delroy Lindo acted his ass off but the story felt undercooked to me. The historical references and images were cool but it felt a bit too on the nose.

The BLM scene felt so forced and all the death scenes were super telegraphed.

Overall, I give this a 3/5
