How is it c00ning?? :dahell:

....Then again, reading that scene once again, he does seem a bit weary that they are calling him Black. Like he's ashamed of his blackness.

But at the same time, he wants to be known about his accomplishments and his results, not his race. He wants to put that first over being known as some type of affirmative-action superhero.

Nah it's the same vein as when I hear from people, "You're really hot, for a black guy..."

Exactly. He doesn't want to be a fetish or some novelty act or a token nor does he want to be known for just being black or Hispanic. He doesn't want the whole "he speaks so well" shyt

Better question why did he end up with his Ma dukes last name :skip:

did you read the books? it's never outright explained, but his dad is insanely fearful of miles repeating his -- and his brother's -- mistakes (his dad used to be a double agent for shield, and might have powers). so giving him his mother's maiden name makes sense for that reason alone.

He comes off as mad "all lives matter" in these panels.

he comes off like he's spider-man first, and what you (or anyone else) want him to be doesn't matter. he also comes off like a 14-15 year old kid who's right at the point where figuring out why being spider-man AND black is important.

i'm interested to see how bendis handles this topic. it would be extremely difficult for anyone to contextualize, to understand the different tics and beats that need to be addressed. but he's got his work cut out for him. i applaud him for taking it on. but i hope he understands the backlash he's inviting if he doesnt knock this one out of the park.

miles' head is in the right place. but being a black spider-man is important. explaining why it's important is important. and the character has to learn why, even if he's right to want to be spider-man, not black spider-man.

that said, from what i've read so far, bendis knows this theme ties into classic spider-man stories where kids imagine who's under the mask. it looks like he's spinning that story to discuss what it now means coming from miles' POV. but we'll see.

side note: i've never seen an artist account for style the way sara pichelli does. her characters LOOK like they shop in NYC. or like the kids who used to get clowned for not being able to shop at certain spots.

No he comes off as a biracial cat who doesn't want his race to be the first thing people talk about or the only thing people talk about. He wants to be known by what he does and the people he saves and the lives he changes.

The thing is that he isn't real, and this isn't really a black/hispanic teen talking...it's an old ass white dude trying to speak through him, and if he wants enter into this type of conversation you better believe that we have a right to be highly critical of him.

He doesn't come off as SM first, he comes off as a 50 year old white dude clumsily trying to take some intelligent perspective on racial issues, and instead, just telling his audience that being black isn't an important part of ones identity.

But the thing is, I agree with miles as a black man. So I don't care who's saying it because I agree with him. A friend of mine is friends with an astronaut and she says that people ask her all the time "how does it feel to be a female astronaut" instead of how does it feel to be an astronaut. He's not handling it clumsily if I as a 30 year old black man agree that I want to be known for more than being the smart black guy with two masters degrees and just want to be known as the smart guy with two masters degrees. It's the same point Aaron mcgruder has made on the boondocks with Huey.

And I'm not speaking up for Bendis, he doesn't need me to do that for him but he's also the father to a black kid (adopted) so it's not like any of this comes from out of his ass. Now that doesn't mean he gets it completely. He'll never be able to get it completely. But I'm sure he sees some shyt through the eyes of his kid as any parent does
