Gettin' It In
I bought the 4K at target Friday night for some reason when they aren't supposed to be out until tomorrow
Earlier in this thread when the movie came out I asked if Miles was on some Finn shyt in this, because I wasn't about to watch 2 hours of Miles running behind a white bytch and being a lackey in his own movie
I wasn't disappointed
Miles is clearly in love with Gwen, but not at the cost of everything he needs to accomplish. His mama even told him not to lose himself for no white bytch
And how does he display this? When he finds out the truth of his situation and how Gwen left him in the dark he said "fukk you bytch" my nikka Miles
Miles was a direct counter to the weak, passive, indecisive, agency lacking black men that are a regular in movies and tv. He has doubts and insecurities because he's human, but he also has confidence that comes with being good at what you do. He has enough agency to reject being pulled in multiple directions against what he felt was the right thing to do. This is what heroes and hero tales are made of
Now there is a dichotomy, and Miles' decision could be interpreted as selfish and adjacent to villainy, because villians are typically selfish, but Miles himself doesn't see it that way because he believes a life is worth saving. That's some good ass writing right there
Honestly, the Miles / Finn contrast is a very underrated aspect.
Just so you know, Amy Paschal (Sony exec) views Gwen the same way Kathleen Kennedy (Disney exec) views Rey. As far back as 2018 there was a vanity fair interview with her basically revealing that Gwen was her favorite, the next movie (across the spider-verse) would be a love-story between her and Miles, and the movie would serve as a launching pad for a Gwen-centric spin-off movie starring all spider-women
The big difference is either Amy learned from Kathleen's complete mishandling of Rey, or the producers (Lord & Miller) and directors (one of them being a breh) wasn't going to let her fukk it up
No "force is female", no "m-she-u", no bait-n-switch with the black male being a dumbed down simp. shyt, even MCU T'Challa (in BP 1) was a glorified version of Finn in ways. Stayed getting his ass kicked and his "Rey" (Nakia) had the actual agency and heroism.
So to see Miles in a healthy romantic caper, and winning his fights, and outsmarting muthafukkas... maaaaan.
in almost all movies the hero loses in the beginning and wins at the end.
