This team has two of the best hitters in baseball history (don't trust Judge in the clutch, but still), a perpetual Cy Young candidate who owns one already, an exciting trade acquisition... and is still unwatchable a significant percentage of the time.

HOW?

Poor leadership from the top down. There’s a culture of apathy and arrogance that no player alone can solve. This is a team that openly refuses to play its best players and demote its worst players. Everything about the way they’re run is set up to validate the evaluation process of their GM while there’s no standard of winning anymore. The very concept of punt lineups existing on this franchise says all that needs to be said. Every single offseason they pass on the top tier free agents and chase bargain bin deals with the 2nd and 3rd tier guys just so they can try to look smarter. Think about how nobody really gets better on this team once they get here but many guys get worse. Think about how no draft picks ever pan out. That all begins and ends with the owner and GM. The purest examples I can point to is look at the abomination Cashman built for opening day 2021, the horrid moves of the 2021 deadline, his 2021-22 offseason that set them back 3-5 years, his 2022 deadline which set them back another 2-3 years, his terrible 2022-23 offseason, and his lack of any moves whatsoever at the 2023 deadline. That sort of extended stretch of incompetence is only possible if the owner puts no pressure on the organization to be great and leaves someone bad at their job to their own devices because profit margins are his only concern.
