And the black crowd might be put off by how weird the movie is.

When I saw it in Atlanta, folks were laughing hard throughout the movie but at the end folks were just confused. When it ended there was a mixture of WTF and scattered applause. Like I said, I'm reaaally interested in hearing other folks opinions.

:patrice:What the fuk did I just watch? I guess the premise was okay (and predictable/overused), but I’m not sure this was executed well. I had absolutely no feeling for the plight of Lakeith’s character. I didn’t connect with really any of the characters...they were all hollow. Can’t really blame the actors I guess..the writing isn’t good at all. Not one quotable that I can remember. The only ingenious element was his interaction with the callers. That whole premise at the end....fukin stupid, corny and simple as fuk. This is honestly straight to DVD quality...

I've seen it last week in Atlanta and I hated this film. Here's why. I get Boots intentions. I do appreciate him trying to make a satirical original film that speaks upon race and white supremacy. It is noble even though Jordan Peele and the way he executed those same intentions superbly better with Get Out. But the movie was trying to be too weird when it really didn't need to. The movie would of been exceptionally better had it been grounded and not trying too hard to be abstract, and even if he meant it to be overly abstract, he's clearly not David Lynch or Franz Kafka who were masters of blending abstract and absurdity with realism. The movie was all over the place, did not have a coherent plot or message even when it attempted to find one. It never had any voice. The pacing was terrible, when it felt long despite it only being 1hr and 40mins. Granted there was some laughable scenes hear and there, but the movie was getting a bit too frustrating stepping over itself. And there's never real closure.

And with all of that, that wasn't what made me hate this film. It is because of this:
The movie jumping the shark by introducing the human horse hybrids. Not only that shyt was so left field, it was insulting for me that Boots wants to compare our historical experience in slavery of that being hybrids of our African DNA, due to chemical and biological transformations throughout our ancestral existence here in America. The whole comparison, the whole idea of us not genetically pure really pissed me off, because I know my history and I know white people will NOT see it for what it is and LAUGH as if that shyt is funny, making jokes about us having bigger dikks metaphorically and all that. That shyt should be for jokes. That whole part and premise really disgust me. I don't give a fact that he was trying to speak on such a horror from a metaphorical perspective and try to soften it by being funny. That shyt wasn't funny at all. As a proud black man, I don't get down with that shyt.

This is why I enjoy THE FIRST PURGE way more. The First Purge was straight forward and did not sugarcoat nothing of how devious and evil white people are and this government. It addressed the same kind of issues this film tried to address, but with coherency, bluntness while still providing an entertainment factor. And we have a BLACK HERO that rose and murking these devils and ending up fighting for a revolutionary cause whereas the main character in Sorry To Bother You was a pure sell-out uncle Tom that was willing to oppress his own for cash (no pun intended) and was soft and meek and a straight p*ssy. fukk this movie. Very disappointed with Boots Riley for this one.

Just left from seeing it and I feel like it’s one of those movies I really was trying to make myself like because I like all parties involved and the premise of it. Unfortunately it was just poorly executed. Everyone in the theater kinda just sat there when it ended. Watching people slowly take it in after it was over and start to slowly file out was almost more funny than the movie. Oddly enough I predicted the ending based on how left things kept going. As a fan of off beat movies, there was no connection even to the world they set the rules for.

I didn't like the horse plot either but I think you're being overly harsh and I didn't get your interpretation at all. To me, it was more of a heavy handed satire of the working class being turned into work horses against our will under a capitalistic system than him trying to say black folks aren't genetically pure.

I feel this movie ended up being more about capitalism than race. It "just to happened" the main character was black thus there were the obvious racial elements, but it seems the Creator couldn't decide if they wanted to tackle race or capitalism or all of them, so I kinda felt like the movie took a pivot on its overall goal verses tackling everything. After the "freestyle" scene the race elements of the movie ended then it went purely into Capitalism while earlier when it was focused a bit on race the capitalist criticism naturally went along with it.

that company throughout the movie were criticized and accused of slavery. The pitch to Cash was they were going to kidnap people have them insert the drug that'll change them into hybrids so they could work harder than the average human. Cash was supposed to agree with working as their leader of these enslaved hybrids into to neutralize any form of revolt. The fact throughout the film the accusation of slavery was made. How you not see this for what it is? You know in history the colonizers took the strongest slave and discarded the weakest and breeded those within. This was precisely what they were referring.

It "just to happened" the main character was black thus there were the obvious racial elements, but it seems the Creator couldn't decide if they wanted to tackle race or capitalism or all of them, so I kinda felt like the movie took a pivot on its overall goal verses tackling everything. After the "freestyle" scene the race elements of the movie ended then it went purely into Capitalism while earlier when it was focused a bit on race the capitalist criticism naturally went along with it.

The movie was definitely about race, classism, capitalism and white supremacy. Even about white privilege hence the meaning behind the white voice. But it was so over the place nothing was sticking.

There was a racial element there, most definitely. But the message to me seemed more about the belief that capitalism was a form of modern day slavery with WorryFree being a caricature of it and the fact that the people were turned into literal work horses. The dehumanization aspect reflected the belief that the working class becomes dehumanized when we're just cogs in the wheel of a capitalist society. The union vs Scab conflict, the illusion of advancement with the Power Callers in Regal View all played into that. Again, it was heavy handed but implying that Boots was on some c00n shyt and reinforcing a white supremacist belief about black folks is very unfair imo. Didn't get that vibe at all.
