Now, with Ryan on his way out, there are a lot of questions to ask about the strategic future of PlayStation. Some insiders are worried about the company’s lack of coherent vision, with its seemingly misplaced bets on service games, niche VR headsets and a baffling machine called the PlayStation Portal that allows people to play PS5 games on the go — but only by streaming them from your home PS5 via WiFi.
A few years ago, service games were the hottest thing in the industry. But now, even the sensation Fortnite isn’t making as much money as it once did. This bet on multiplayer games may not pay off the way Ryan and his team had once hoped
Early last year, Ryan helmed Sony’s acquisition of Destiny-maker Bungie, one of the top service game developers in the world, in hopes of accelerating this pivot. But it took Bungie decades to develop the teams, technology and production pipelines that have made Destiny successful — and even so, they had some serious growing pains along the way. Even Bungie’s expertise has not yet been able to turn PlayStation Studios into a service-game factory.

Jim Ryan ain’t get fired for nothing.

Sony been scrambling for a while now. They are selling consoles off the strength of the brand, but they are flailing around trying to figure how to cash in on said customer base.

Everything is kinda, maybe. Won’t go all in on PSVR. The handheld is not a real handheld, can’t even stream from PSnow which they’ve been all over the place with the messaging and strategy in itself.

Their PC presence is unreliable, bad ports coming in at Random times whenever they want to release it.

They talked about making Service games going forward but they are way behind with that

They were supposed to have 6 of them out by now, and they still just have the one.

No imminent game releases past spiderman in their “single party Catalog”.

“Insiders” ain’t wrong to be looking at Sony and Jim like :usure:

Bungie is good at developing fps games. Something Sony is sorely lacking in their catalog at the moment. Should be putting them to develop a good Sci fi fps akin to what Halo was for Microsoft.
Games as a service was a trend not necessarily a staying thing. Like it will always be there but its popularity wont be the same. Gamers catch on to the same tactics being used over and over and at the end of the day the core gamers only have so much money to spend on these games.

With Ryan gone, my concern isn't GAAS, but the first-party AA-level games. Ryan really squashed those. Why is Clap Hanz out here making mobile games instead of Everybody's Golf PS5? Where is a new Ape Escape? Why not try to revive some old Sony IP at the AA level like Jumping Flash or Vib Ribbon?

Ryan killing first-party AA games when Nintendo steadily profits off of their own AA games is stupid. Even Microsoft puts out decent AA-level games under their banner. We need a reversal of course on that.
