This should be applauded. They are funding the creation of bunch of brand new AAA studios without the intention of owning them and consolidating them into sony game factories. This is good business...and even better for the industry as a whole

If you’re going to invest in something then you should seek to own it. Giving a studio money to build them up so they can be “free” is stupid.

Hmmm…

Not sure if this is the best route given MS predatory practices.

MS wouldn’t think twice about buying them up.

They own the IP which is more valuable

Similar to Kojima productions. They invested in Death Stranding and own it from this point on, and own the engine is was built on.

If Microsoft wants kojima they have to get him without the IP and Engine he’s worked on for 4+ years.

And if they buy Kojima productions they will be buying a shell of a company because KP if kojima decides to ever retire and make theme parks or movies, isn’t really much of a company and you can’t own the heads of a company.

IP will always trump talent, talent can leave anytime they want

Just don’t let EA or Activision buy them. You’ll watch that developer slowly go to shyt with $60-70 games with free to play elements

Buying developers is short sighted. Thats why sony is investing in IP creation not just talent. They want new IP they can own and turn into other media, not just games.

If you buy a studio for talent, and the talent leaves all you have left is a name. Thats why nintendo and sony are stressing the whole “organic” growth thing because they want to develop relationships with people to the point where they know they trust them enough to maintain their positions for years to come or replace them with similar leadership. They will only invest in studios that will create valuable IP for them.

A cool $500 mill from MS would have them having short memories…
Basically this

you can buy studios just like you can buy directors but in today's world IP is king
it's why no one wanted to buy warner brothers games because they're just buying the developers not the IP

Yeah, and what if you buy rocksteady/wb games with no IP, and the talent decides to leave, you basically spent 100’s of millions of dollars on a trademark. Thats pretty much what happened with the Rare acquisition, since they were bought 80% of the old studio left.

Useful idiots over at MSFT.
They make moves that look good on paper but in reality amount to a silent fart. Nobody knows what happened but it fukking stinks.

Simpler explanation is that Sony doesn't have the bag to just go out and buy a bunch of these studios.
:mjlol:

MS resume with purchased studios says they may need to follow Sony's lead - invest in a studio while allowing them to maintain their autonomy. That's why Sony is delivering and MS is meme status.
