I’m just going off the trailer but it seems like it’s going to be a bit more serious. I actually wouldn’t mind that.

Shadow's backstory involves Maria getting killed by G.U.N. and Gerald Robotnik going insane and trying to destroy the Earth in revenge. So, yeah, any story that adapts that is going to be more serious by default.

Gerald apparently being alive in this is an interesting choice. Kind of disappointed that means we won't get my favorite scene in SA2, the recording of Gerald while he explains his plan to destroy the world with ARK, just before getting executed by a G.U.N. firing squad. And Rouge reading his diary entries where he slips into madness. That was some heavy shyt for a Sonic game.

Yes. In the games Gerald created Shadow about 50 years before the games take place. So all the stuff with Maria and his backstory was before Sonic was born. But once they shut down the project, Shadow got sealed away in a capsule by the government and basically spent 50 years in there until Robotnik broke him out in SA2.

But of course they might change stuff in the movie.
