I wonder if the internet in 94-96 was thriving hard on the social tip, would dudes shyt on Nas with the same arguments as cornrow Kenny?
There is something about him, he's just way too damn ahead of everyone in the game right now, its not fair
His content is the type of stuff that thrives at a spoken word poetry night . . for pseudo-intellects who take political science classes at the local university.
Lacks replay value . . entertainment value
King Kunta is production driven track . . the content is lyrically superfluous and doesn't contain half of the entertainment value that the song it was influenced by . . and in case you didn't know the song and it's format and structure is a manifestation of Suga Free's verse on DJ Quik's "Down Down Down" . . if you don't understand that you don't know music and you don't know songwriting. They basically took Suga Free's verse, centered in on it and fleshed out a song from it with superfluous content and catchy funk-driven production
In 2000s mainstream rap the bar has been set so low that dudes will settle. It is what it is. It's where rap is now. People are so starved for something that stimulates them intellectually that they vastly overrate great, but not classic works. I couldn't believe how many people were telling me TPAB was a classic a week after it came out. Mostly hipster white kids actually. The same exact thing happened with MBDTF. G.K.M.C. was far more relatable because he tried to make an album about Kendrick, instead of a "black" album. I liked Cilvia Demo more than anything Kendrick's ever done.
Earl or vince will carry the torchExactly. Say what you want about Kenny, but dude really brought something new to the game and pretty much open the game to the new West on some Outworld Mortal Kombat shyt.
I remember listening to Section 80 for the first time and was blown away. This dude was using random alters to his voice and talking about social issues on a different level to most self conscious rappers. I mean I wanted to hear more, I was hooked.
Then GKMC dropped and it made me feel that hip hop will carry on . Folks fail to see that the game was really on the decline after the mid 2000s. Sure Drake and a few others was killing it, but whose going to satisfy that lyrical hunger, but at the same time make it mainstream. Lupe chugged after Lasers, the new school "college" XXL rappers couldn't hack it, and trap starting to trive in the mainstream...who is going to carry the torch? Kenny came at the right time and to this day, dude been a mouthpiece to the new generation.
Yep. The best rapper of the decade. There is something about him, he's just way too damn ahead of everyone in the game right now, its not fair
Alot of truths in here but i think as usual the poster Sir Biatch is going overboard
I will say this. But i think Kendrick's biggest weakness is his voice or lack of. I remember when him and Beyonce were at the BET Awards performing Freedom last year and you could barely hear his rap. I'm not doubting his sincerity in his feelings on race and everything but i think the reason why it comes across as forced is because his voice is underwhelming. And I don't think it has to do with being "monotone" really. I can't put my finger on it. But Rakim and Nas can be "monotone" and still be dope as fukk with their deliveries.
And especially with Biggie...his voice hit you like an asthma attack. People say Kendrick's voice fits him and isn't the reason but he would be looked at differently on the contrary if dudes saw this little short motherfukker and was like "His voice is like that"? If he had more of a Biggie type of voice he would get more love, he doesn't excite. Even Nas has a lowkey "ill voice"(no pun intended)
I told someone else this the other day but isn't it so embarrassing that Young MA, a dyke from NY has a more "impressive" voice than him?
She is jacking Biggie's flow and cadence but its still sad cause she is a female and draws your attention more with her rapping voice than Kendrick does.
I don't know about TPAB but i just get a feeling if K-Dot had a more impressive voice, an album like GKMC would have gotten more love from this generation
Too bad about that that last verse. "why did I weep for Trayvon Martin?"
Gkmc did get mad love
Alot of u guys on here woefully ignorant to the point where its laughable. Wow.
Most people didn't understand tpab and thats not an issue. That album isn't for everyone. Its an album that deals with mental illness and a black man being exploited. Plus not everyone had the required musical knowledge to understand such a deep complex and rich album. So you just gonna dance over my whole post as if i was not speaking truth?
Nobody said GKMC was wack. It was great. Didn't you hear me say there is a reason Kendrick's generation is not showing him as much love as you expect from a classic album like GKMC and it must be something to do with him. Its not just cause of the low attention span of this generation. Something else is missing from Kendrick.
That's an excuse. It's the artists job to connect to the fans PERIOD.Most people didn't understand tpab and thats not an issue. That album isn't for everyone. Its an album that deals with mental illness and a black man being exploited. Plus not everyone had the required musical knowledge to understand such a deep complex and rich album.
