My family got caught up in the mandatory minimum sentencing. His actual crime was not serious, but his record got him a long stretch.

But if I'm being objective, I understand why society reacts to rampant crime with draconian laws. It's not even a philosophical thing it's just an inevitable outcome.

Like with homeless people. If there was 4 homeless people living in the crevices of your downtown it would be fine. You could even feel good about shooting them a $20 every now and then.

If there's 40 of them. Or 400. Or 4000 then that whole situation becomes increasingly unsustainable.
