Florida State coach
Jimbo Fisher was pleased with the energy from his players on Day One of preseason camp.
The coach joked Tuesday evening that everyone looks good in shorts and new cleats, a reminder of just how early FSU is in the process of developing chemistry and continuity. He did, however, like how players practiced, citing good tempo as well as attentiveness as reasons why he's optimistic about this team.
Here are 10 observations from the first day of practice.
1. This team passes the eye test.
Like Fisher said, everyone looks good at this point in camp, but it's clear that FSU has players with prototypical size/athleticism at every position. The defensive tackles were loaded with one 300-pounder after another and watching the waves of defensive ends' long arms smack down tackling dummies was dizzying. There's a stable of fluid athletes at running back and there's plenty of imposing size among the wide receivers. We'll see how it all comes together this season, but there's no shortage of talent on the roster.
2. RB
Jacques Patrick is maturing.
He's about five pounds heavier than last season, but he looks leaner. Patrick has added lean muscle and it shows in the way he carries himself. Patrick has light feet at 234 pounds and there's legitimate buzz about what he can do this year.
3. WR
Auden Tate confident in receivers.
Tate laughed about being the most seasoned receiver on FSU's roster, but he said Tuesday that he's serious about his new leadership role. Tate said he's confident that he and
Nyqwan Murraycan lead a group of young yet promising receivers.
4.
Delvin Purifoy is with the defensive ends.
The junior is up to 260 pounds now, so Fisher is trying to see if he can bring value on the edge. Pruifoy has never regained his quickness after suffering a serious leg injury as a rookie, so the move to end appears to be an experiment to gauge whether he can grow into that role and provide depth.
5. DE
Janarius Robinson is making strides.
His technique is markedly better from this time last year. The redshirt freshman seemed sure of himself during position drills and things appear to be clicking. Coach
Brad Lawing made sure to praise Robinson after a particularly smooth rep.
6. S
Derwin James took reps at punt returner.
James said he wasn't happy that he dropped one punt, but thinks he'll get the hang of it. The sophomore has made it clear that he thinks he can make a difference with the ball in his hands.
7. CB
Levonta Taylor, WR
Keith Gavin, WR
D.J. Matthews, RB
Zaquandre White and others also took reps fielding punts along with James.
8. Junior OL
Derrick Kelly is going to get a legitimate shot to start at right tackle. "His body is changing, becoming harder, stronger....strong in his hands," Fisher said.
9. Fisher complimented freshman QB
James Blackman's release. "He throws a great ball, throws the ball really pretty."
10. Fisher said the only injured player is OL
Brady Scott, who broke his foot in a scooter accident.
Fisher also discussed expectations for the true freshmen, how the rookie quarterbacks looked and more in the video below.
