A day after Alabama assistant
Mike Locksley and Michigan State assistant
Mark Snyder interviewed at Florida State, here is what I know:
— I don’t have much more to report than what I said last night on
Mark Snyder. I’m told Snyder left Tallahassee yesterday to head back to Michigan and talk to his wife about his decision to potentially leave MSU for FSU. At this point he has not informed
Willie Taggart of what he intends to do. That will likely occur sometime today (Thursday).
Snyder is Michigan State’s defensive ends coach. He’s a candidate for the same job at Florida State. After
Harlon Barnett was hired we said he’d have a hand in making at least one hire on the defensive side of the ball and Snyder is his guy.
Snyder brings 28 years of experience. He’s versatile, having been a head coach, coordinator, ends and linebacker coach.
— As I said yesterday when we broke the news of Mike Locksley’s interview - this one is a little more complicated than Snyder’s deal. Locksley arrived in Tallahassee late Tuesday night, around midnight. Locksley and Taggart spent the day together on Wednesday talking about the culture of the program, what Taggart is trying to achieve on offense and how Locksley could contribute to that.
I’m told Locksley left FSU with a new respect for Taggart. The two had met previously but never sat down, spent time together and got to know each other. There’s no question that Locksley would feel comfortable leaving Alabama. However, money is going to be tough to match and could prevent this deal from happening.
Taggart could do a few things to sweeten the deal. I’ve already reported that if Locksley were to take the job it would include the offensive coordinator title. He wouldn’t be calling plays, but would have more responsibility with game planning and scheme. I’m also told that Taggart would be open to allowing Locksley to coach quarterbacks. This is something that Taggart intended to do, but would be willing to give the reigns over to Locksley if that’s what it took to get him. Locksley has coached quarterbacks for 15 years throughout his career and it’s something he wants to get back to. I’m just not sure that will overcome the money gap between the two sides.
I do not expect this to drag out into the weekend. I’m told Locksley is not concerned about the possibility that current Alabama offensive coordinator
Brian Daboll could end up in the NFL. Locksley understands
Willie Taggart is on a faster timeline with this hire and is not going to base his decision on what Daboll may do in the future.
Based on what I’m told, a phone call will take place today (Thursday) between Locksley and Taggart and there should be some finality - one way or another - on this situation in the next 24-36 hours. Yesterday I reported that if things don’t go down with Locksley and FSU, then Taggart will turn his attention to Purdue assistant
JaMarcus Shephard. I still believe that to be the case, but I’m told there are a couple other names of interest involved as well. I don’t have those names. I’ll take it one step at a time though. Let’s see what happens with Locksley today before moving on to those names.
