The nuclear family is the product of industrial and technological advances which have a hand and hand relationship with our advancement as a species.

The need for people (especially men) to be proficient in multiple manual crafts or trades, or be directly in touch with natural resources, is nowhere near old times and thus the need for extra childcare via grandparents.

The universal quality being assigned to extended families is a bit overstated also. A young man was still expected to establish his own household. The reunion comes upon people getting too old to safely live alone, not as a constant way of life.
