Just had a recruiter reach out to me to work at a scientific laboratory associated with a very big school, making almost twice my salary and 100% remote.

Shiiiiiiit :patrice: I'm going to think on this...

Just having this schools name on my resume work history seem like it would be game changing even if i didn't stay there long.

I think I made it to the final interview with the hiring manager of my first choice. Hoping for good news soon...

Anyway, here are a few more questions I've encountered. And just a reminder, I'm in the market for Data Engineering/Senior Data Engineer
Technical:
  • Coding - Find the most frequent trigrams given a string input
  • What's the difference between a deep and shallow copy (answer)
  • What's the difference between multi-processing and multi-threading, and when would you use each?
  • How to you performance tune your sq?
  • Have you ever dealt with more data than expected
  • What is the diifference between data warehousing and regular databases
    • What is so special about columnar databases
    • What is the difference between OLAP and OLTP
    • (Basically for these questions, its about what data is stored next to each other in memory. Row based vs column based)
  • Python - What is list comprehension? (answer)
  • Python - What are generator functions? (answer)

Non-Technical:
  • Tell me about a time when you made a mistake
  • What do you do when you receive feedback
  • Do you prefer to work by yourself or work collaboratively
  • Tell me about a project that you were really proud of

Having a talk with the recruiter this afternoon. I just got a merit based "raise" at my current job this week. It's the usual CoL increase with about 2% tacked on. Inflation probably already put me at a loss with that . So, yeah, I'm going to see where this goes.

I actually like my team and management but yeah, as we all know, the only way to get a real raise is this industry is to job hop. :comeon:

If debts and bills werent stealing all of this cash, I might be more content. But we are trying for a baby and I'm not trying to carry loan payments and debts forever.

You'd think they would want to work on retention so that all the domain knowledge doesn't keep leaving.

I agree. And 1 of my issues is that like if I ask for more money but stay at the same company, I'm digging myself into a hole because I don't feel like there's enough growth opportunity as developer, so I wind up just being overpaid. So I'm hoping with this move, even if I wind up with the same salary, I'll be on projects constantly, instead of having to make things up when there's no work

You would think. But these companies still out here playing games with people who aren't in any fear of not finding a job anytime soon given the demand. They can do this with juniors or fresh grads because they don't know better.

But, they know inflation is out of control and for
the people with just a small amount of experience, there isn't a shortage of people looking to steal them with promises of higher pay. Companies need to stop bullshytting and come up off that cash. The days of where our parents worked for a company until retirement is over.

Officially got a job offer! Its pretty much in line with what I'm looking for and I think there's great growth opportunity. Plus it comes with a good picture on the linkedin experience section, lol. I still think there's a good chance I can get the job I really want, but I don't meet with them until midweek next week, so I'll have to say no. I'll wait for other offers before I actually say no though

FYI, if you are really interested in the other job, one option is to reach out ASAP & let them know you received an offer but would like to know if we can move the process forward a tad because you are interested in working for them.

I didn't make the cut but an employer did move my interview up a week when they found out I was in the final round with another company.

Why is this thread so much smaller than the it carts thread?

Does programming not pay as much as the IT Certs?

Are IT Certs easier to get?

Does anybody recommend programming over IT Certs, and if so why?

Because there aren't many programmers on here. And there are even fewer who program using traditional compiled languages in non-webby fields.

What's the big deal? It is what it is.

This. The truth of the matter is that the jobs that are niche and require heavy knowledge of math and programming are not as common as tech jobs that require just IT certs to attain. Those jobs that require heavy programming knowledge are usually dominated by STEM graduates and those who went to do some research based grad program in the sciences. The number of people who are in tech having those specialized jobs are likely to be the minority so threads like this won't do numbers like that.

Grinding out the Blind 75 right now on Neetcode's site, going to try and look for a new job next year.

Anyone else got a good youtuber who does these videos?

I like these folks in addition to Neetcode:
Timothy H. Chang

Michael Muinos:
I vouch for this Adbul Bari breh. He really is one of the best out there and the view count tells it all :wow:
