Does anyone here know of any resources to find a mentor in software development/programming? Specifically a black programmer.
I've been a Senior Data Analyst for a major label for 5 years and just need some guidance on pivoting careers.

Why do you want to switch careers, if you don't mind sharing?

Do most of yall work on Windows or Mac?

I just received my work laptop and its a Mac, which I dont have experience on. Maybe I could dual-boot it if I have the permissions.

I've been exclusively using linux for everything since 2012. I have never owned a Mac or used one, so cant give you any pointers. Cant you just ask for a windows laptop? Most jobs give you a choice.

Windows but I do everything in a Linux VM unless there's something that requires Windows. Presents it's own set of issues since I'm divergent from the team, however it pays off down the line since 99% of this shyt gets deployed to Linux anyway.

It's not a big deal. My start date is the 12th so ill just play around with Apple OS to get an understanding of it.

I mainly use Windows for work, but I've used Linux and Unix before. It pays to be platform agnostic. Embrace it, you might fall in love with it.

You can use Virtual Box to host a Linux or Windows VM on your mac. You can even ssh into it if a local Desktop session is too slow.

You could also use a company like LunaNode, Linode to host a remote VM with a Desktop (e.g. Plasma).

You could also dual boot BUT software might not be fully ready for M1 macs ...

I dual boot to Windows on my main macbook when required. I didnt put Linux on it but used to run Linux on a 2012 macbook.

Mainly because I hate speaking/presenting a lot which is required in my role.
I also consider myself to be a creative/nerd, I engineer music on the side so I have a knack for machinery/apps etc..
I want to be in an environment where Its mostly just me and my computer vs me interacting with a lot of people on a daily basis.

Just recently graduated from a business technology management program and seem to have trouble landing a job as a business analyst. It seems I am in a tricky spot where I don't have the experience that these job postings are looking for, but I do have somewhat relevant experience in a technology sales role. I do have some knowledge of web development and python and pondering if I should spend spare time mastering that and switch more into a developer role

Moidern development is moving increasingly away from lone-nerd-and-his-machine development. Which is a low down dirty shame.

Yeah I'm hearing there are frequent meetings and other dreadful bs from the business world that's creeping into it. It's not something that I'm looking forward to once I'm job ready.

I use windows, but do a decent amount of work in linux docker containers or WSL2. Only times I ever use mac was for game/mobile releases to the app store.

Scrums aka "AA standup" as well :hhh:

Non-techies have well and truly conquered IT :francis:

I actually enjoy the frequent scrums. Sometimes I can just use the time to ask questions that I had rather than having to set up a huddle/meeting. It also helps that my scrum meetings are usually implemented in a way for each member of the team to communicate what they're doing instead of it being a progress report o some kind.

I prefer to ignore everyone in the office until we have something concrete to talk about.

Scrum is more standardisation to help management manage stuff that the don't really understand.

When done correctly on the right type of projects, I think its useful. Its not supposed to be standardisation, though some management teams view it as such, its just supposed to be a tool to make sure the project gets completed ontime and any issues (technical or otherwise) are brought up asap. And it really doesn't work well if the project isn't a short one, being implemented as an Agile project, or if there are more than 7-8 people on it. I've had a decent amount of exposure to project that were called Agile, but weren't really implemented as such.

It helps me communicate with the team, because I also tend to be heads down on tasks.
