Where are you at, where are you trying to go?

So sorry for the late reply my brother. I was tryna work that all out! I’m literally starting to get out of a mentally and emotionally living taxing situation. I had to focus on getting my mind right. I am completing my masters in linguistics and also going to learn Arabic for a year abroad. I need to start all over.

I’m a Language person. I can write my ass off in minutes but code is a different ball game. Tbh I can learn anything and make it happen, I have to! I know I can do it but I don’t know what the routes are. I get so overwhelmed and I see a lot of bs jargon being used to throw ppl off the scent. I want to be independent, successful and able to help others.

I scooped the $8 tier for Learning SQL and R Cookbook. Both books costs $30 each on Amazon so it's a no brainer for me

Learning C++ and Python
Pick one, no need to do both at once. I'd use Python then after completing it try re-implementing the stuff in C++. Python will make the concepts a lot clearer.

Anyway here is the book. Everything is very well explained. This is the first resource I used to learn Python years ago and Im thankful for it because I learnt so many good coding habits from it.

I was planning on quitting my job and focusing on studying for my google interviews fulltime for a month or 2 but covid came and I kinda push that back but now im wondering if I should do it now.... I got like 3 years industry experience under my belt and a fat savings account (about a years expenses) but i'm a bit risk averse. Honestly for what i'm doing i'm being under paid big time.

Anyone ever do something like this? Quitting a job without having another one lined up.?

Most advise i've read regarding this insists that you only ever do it when you know for sure you have enough money to sustain yourself throughout your job search. Since you say you have a fat savings account then maybe you can pull it off.

Why cant u search while working? Do you hate your current job that much that you'd rather quit on the spot?

What is better? going jobless for 3+ months while not knowing when you'll find what you want? or do the same thing while still earning your regular salary. Because trust me you wont be sending out job applications or doing leetcode ALL day everyday. The human brain wont allow that without u crashing hard

To be honest i was just a bit burnt out but what you're saying is making sense. I think ill try and grind it out here for a couple more months then.

I was on track to do something similar (Focus was on certs to get paid more, not necessarily FAANG).

Nowadays, I think it might not be the best idea... it could be worth it but you need to guarantee that you are the cream of the crop in your time off. Here are the things that make me anxious:
  • Being content with a year's worth of savings presumes that the job environment will have sorted itself out in a year... I wasn't as skilled back then, but in '09 after the recession, nobody was hiring.
  • If you quit you are not eligible for unemployment no matter how bad things get.
  • I thought that taking time off would allow me to hone my skills in a way that the average employee doesn't do often in their professional career. However, with people being forced to sit down and stay at home, I think that a lot more people are self-educating or pivoting to new industries which could make the post-Covid job market tougher
On the flipside, you are still early in your career and a solid year of studying could alter your trajectory significantly :yeshrug:
