Oh, and somebody posted this gif as support for the "but if we just had more ATHLETICISM" argument at some point in the thread:

gareth-bale-copa-goal-against-barca-b.gif

I'm not going to pontificate any more (my last post was far too long as is), but this is roughly 15% athleticism and 85% skill being shown here. Yes, Bale's athleticism is important here, but if he doesn't have the requisite ball skills to supplement it to begin with, it doesn't happen.

An American player that tried this would probably get the ball kicked out of play be the defender or would try Bale's trick and punt the ball into the 5th row somewhere.
Do me a favour :comeon:

Almost every touch there by Bale was shoddy. More like 90% athleticism.

I know we want to protect the good name of football in the face of these wicked Americans but lets not act like Bale isnt just Clint Dempsey with pace.

An even faster (plus more agility, this breh can only run in straight lines) version of Bale would be entirely within the capabilities of American soccer if they successfully tapped into the inner cities, even if they made little improvement in coaching.

:whoa:

Not an expert. I'll fall on the sword on this one.

Dempsey has very good skill. One of the best I've seen from an American

:dead: at cats in this thread thinking thinking basketball players like lebron James or john wall are only good because they're super athletic while totally ignoring the reason that they're so good is because of their high bball IQ and fundamentals combined with their athletic prowess. Hell two of the top three teams in the NBA (spurs and warriors) are the most fundamentally sound and technical teams in the league. So to say players like like jwall, lebron, kobe etc are only good because basketball requires that only is silly. If that was the case someone like Gerald green would be dominating every game. Look no one is saying" let's just throw all our best athletes in and we win" no we're simply saying if we were to focus our best athletes at a you age to the technicality and skills of soccer then things would be undoubtedly different. And its laughable how many of you are downplaying athleticism in soccer when that combined with skills is what make ronaldo zlatan ronaldinho etc some great freaks of the sport.

might be different, probably wouldnt....even with the best coaching theres so many great national teams that even having a great starting XI doesnt guarantee you win anything...

So you think that with all I said combined with the culture of futbol brought to the states, we still would be the same mediocre team?because that is my argument is that without question we would be better than we are now.

He can sub for a bottom table club but he's basically an MLS talent like Altidore.
Nah

Dempsey was really good talent for a midtable premier league side.

Altodore wasn't even good for a lower premier league team.

I dont remember Dempsey being more than a sub for Fulham who was always in the relegation window.
