Like i said, the point is moot anyway because it's a work of fiction. I believe the intent was to be morality parables to encourage good behavior, not to be an historical text.

It can do some good. Some passages while portrayed as spiritual actually served practical purposes in their times. For example Muslim's stance against pork in my opinion was likely in order to prevent the spread of disease. Pigs were fed nothing but trash and sometime even human corpse and carried all sorts of parasite. They played as if it was spirtual thing to not eat pork, but really they were just trying to prevent people from catching illnesses.
Religion can have practical uses for things like that, because some people simply aren't willing to listen to logic and need inspiration to behave in a non destructive manner.
