Mike the Executioner
What went on up there? Poppers and weird sex!
It's not a misinterpretation nor is it recent. I've felt this way for years
I'm not saying the Boondocks is without it's merits but there are definitely glimpses of Mcgrueder feeling like he's God's gift to nikkas
It's a vibe I admittedly can't articulate completely but definitely believe when I notice it. But look at something like Chris Rocks "Black People vs Nikkas". That joke came from the type of personality I'm getting at.(Rock eventually said he regrets this joke for what it's worth)
I feel the same way about Drake and Donald Glover. Quietly look at black folks like but make their bread selling black culture
I'm not saying what you feel is invalid or you're looking at things the wrong way. The Boondocks wasn't a perfect show. It admittedly became less earnest over time, focusing more on Riley, Granddad, and Uncle Ruckus than Huey. Season four felt to me like exactly what you're describing. That's when the show became a parody of itself and some of what it did was legitimately uncomfortable ("Early Bird Special," "Freedomland").
But I actually look at The Boondocks similar to that Chris Rock joke. Criticism of the black community within the black community is something that black people inherently understand. The criticism can be valid. But when it crosses over to white people, they ignore the context and nuance and just say, "See, these Negros are stupid! Aaron McGruder/Chris Rock/Dave Chappelle said so!" It's not for them to understand, and then the comedy gets used as an example of internalized racism when that wasn't the original point.
I'm just saying that there's a reason why The Boondocks worked so well in the 2000s, and why it probably wouldn't work so well in the 2020s. There are definitely people out there that wouldn't get it and want it out of here, like what's happening with Chappelle.
