Because it has been theoretically determined through the mathematics first and then has been confirmed through an enormous amount of experimentation at ridiculous levels from the submolecular up through the astronomical and under literally every condition ever tested. For instance, when talking about the speed at which objects travel, it's not like there's some invisible barrier at the speed of light. It's much more profound than that - it's as if the very nature of spacetime does not allow anything to ever move at that speed. Light in a vacuum ALWAYS moves at exactly the speed of light (going though any other material it will be slower), and anything with mass ALWAYS moves at below the speed of light. As you approach the speed of light, the additional energy required to accelerate increases exponentially in direct proportion to how close to the speed of light you are going, and even your experience of spacetime warps accordingly. Even mathematically you could never reach the speed of light, because not only would it take infinite energy but you would also become infinitely massive while being infinitely compressed in space, and time would slow until it actually stopped.

In the past it was theorized that if spacetime was warped on a large scale, it may be possible to skip from one place in spacetime to another using warpholes that joined two different parts of the spacetime continuum, perhaps through a spinning or electrically charged black hole, and thus travel between two points in time faster than a beam of light would by shortening the distance rather than by going faster than light. What is physics other than a road map for understanding reality? The map is not the territory. There are some things that cannot be explained with our current understanding of reality. You're assuming that human beings have it all figured out when we dont.
