So we can't listen to a 5-6 minute song but a 3 hour podcast is fine?

I'm trying to understand this logic. Songs now are like 2 minutes long, they took away the third verse. People say the younger generation has a shorter attention span. I also read that in 2024 you have to listen to a song for at least 2 minutes for it to count as a stream. My thing is how is it that we can't listen to a 5 minute song but we listen to podcasts for 2 to 3 hours. I'm just not a fan of these short 2-3 min songs

Podcasts aren't a repetitive outlet like songs are. And they usually aren't consumed more than once.

Also, who said you can't listen to a longer song? Isn't like 70% of all music sales older music anyway. If you like the earlier style, listen to that. It's not like there's some remarkably new style or subject matter in music taking the world by storm.

Songs were originally short in the 45 era(before hip hop). The early albums, including hip hop, were short albums with 10 songs or less. Now a 10 song album is considered and EP, but it's smart. Chris Brown years ago released a 30-track album. why??? What is the point in spending almost a year to record and release 30 songs that people will listen to for 2 weeks and forget about?

The rise of the podcast in hip hop is one of the worst things to happen to the artform
It's really not tho. Maybe the current iteration is trite or overly performative but when you break down the real 4-7 true elements of HIP HOP? :patrice:

Street Knowledge/journalism is alive and mostly well. If you take umbrage with it, it's likely due to the source material and current culture that's being observed. :yeshrug:

But I will concede that there is a extra layer of pandering and contrarianism that could be curbed. But curbed for who? :whoo:

sigh

songs actually used to be pretty short, especially when vinyl was popular. running times didn't really eclipse 3 minutes until the 80's and peaked in the 2010's at almost 4:30. times are going down now, but that's natural.
