If Americans are too shook about an ongoing crisis, they could vote for who's already there because they don't want change just like in wars, Americans always vote the incumbent back in...

But if he's percieved to have dropped the ball like Carter (who actually didn't) then Americans could vote him out.

I know both campaigns must be worried...thus far, Romney's not impressed me with his wooden "I understand that some people may be experiencing a crisis" speech. I don't think this man has had a genuine human feeling/interaction in his life always comes off like a robot.
