he was pissed because he knew he'd probably spend the rest of his life in prison and instead of accepting responsibility for his own actions he blamed Carruth and tried to act like he had no choice

that's what got me confused. He's a fukking hitman but he's acting like he didn't know the consequences, but apparently Rae had shooters on deck to kill him if he didn't go through with the hit.
The gunshot trauma caused her to lose consciousness. Because of this, there was no oxygen getting to the baby's brain, which caused severe brain damage. Then doctors performed emergency c-section and got the kid out anyway. She remained in a coma and died a month later. Kid is left with cerebral palsy.
