It's business at the end of the day. As a man, he should have tried to set dude up with a situation.

what do you know about this?

MCQUEEN: [laughs] I grew up in Europe, in London, and you grew up in the States. When was the first time you came to Europe? Do you remember?

WEST: I think it was when Damon Dash had me and some other Roc-A-Fella artists come over. He stressed the importance of connecting with London, especially. Then we went to France, and I hated France when we first went there. Now, of course, I love it. But at the time, there was a rapper out of Chicago who wanted me to show up at some event of his, and he was trying to threaten me in some way physically if I didn't show up because we had done a record together. And Dame Dash had to man-up on the situation and apply a bit of gangster to have them fall back, just for me to be able to get on that first flight to London.

Hmmm. Not really sure what I think. I know a lot of situations where producers have double sold beats because of bad communication with one artist, or thinking a song won't get used, or asking the smaller artist if they mind the beat being sold to a bigger artist, then the smaller artist releases it later.

There are so many reasons why a beat can be sold twice without it being a shady situation. This obviously seems different because of the hook issue. I think never Change is a better song, but there are just a lot of unanswered questions.

Did Kanye present the beat to Jay along with a hook that he and Jay rapped together? Without Jay knowing of the previous song? Or did Kanye play Jay the previous song and say 'hey, we should re-do this with the same hook?" Honestly, the first situation seems more likely to me as what actually happened, that Kanye didn't tell Jay it was a song already. I just don't buy that they had a relationship at that time that was strong enough for Kanye to have the balls to play an already made song for Jay and say "Let's just re-do it."

On the other hand, Kanye was and is a ballsy dude. I do think that whether for payroll or for Jay, that Kanye probably wrote the hook himself.

It's pretty obvious Kanye played him the beat with the previous song. Both songs have the same direction, content. No coincidence

Producers re-sale beats all the time, shady but its business

Rick Ross ft Jay Z :mjpls:Maybach Music

This 1000 times better than the jigga version

Game song from the jesus album, cook n soul production

Jadakiss we gonn make it

Yep! The Jadakiss and Ras Kass situation was actually the first time I heard about double beat selling. I'm glad that ALC and Ras Kass ironed everything out and have gone on to make more good music. It's funny because Priority fukked both of them on that one. Alchemist never got all of the money for the beat, and Priority never was able to get that beat Kass' album (or two others that ALC did that no one ever talks about).

Home Sweet Home cost $7,500. I wonder what Kiss/Ruff Ryders paid for it. Also, Nas passed on that beat too.
:mindblown:

But yeah, now that I really listen to Payroll's lyrics, I definitely think Jay probably heard the entire record.

Also, it wasn't beyond Jay to take an already finished song and remove someone. Obviously, this was done with Royce's consent, but this is the original version of Renegade (also on Blueprint) for anyone that never heard it. All they did was replace Royce's verses with Jay's verses, Em added some more production, and that was it. I don;t think Em even re-recorded his verses, since they just scratched over the part where he said "He's Royce, he's the king of Detroit."

EDIT: It actually does sound like Em re-recorded his verses.
