It’s easy in hindsight to say what he should have done but we all know those situations never go down like that and happen in the course of 30 seconds.
I unfortunately have known dudes like the one who got punched and there is no shortage of them. If you were Hispanic, he’d have made that comment about Hispanic people, if you were Chinese he’d have made it associated with Asian etc. Scapegoating is the only way they can deal with their anger and shortcomings.
There is no right way to deal with them. If you let it slide in the moment, they’ll think they got away with something and keep pressing. If you go to HR they will deny it and it will enhance their anger and they will look to recruit people to their cause against you.
Id probably let it slide, update my resume, wait til i found my next job and then call him out to his face in front of everyone to trigger him back out of his shell in a public setting. No laying hands cuz they’ll just press charges.

I went off on someone I worked with at another job in 2014 or so. Dude was talking sly saying some wild shyt. Some shyt that was borderline racial.
I told him what was the equivalent of "calm down" and I gave him and interdepartment task to do and he started barking.
I stood up and I barked at him "you're going to watch your mouth around me, I'm not your fukking wife and we're not your fukking family, if you want to talk loud and run your fukking mouth you can go home, because you're not running shyt around here."
Male staff stepped in and made sure things didn't escalate to physical contact. Kept us separate. He didn't do nothing but continue yelling "he's not going to tell me what to do! He's not gonna sit there talk about my family!"
Why that made him so angry was because he's had some domestic incidents at his house and because we are government anytime we have contact with law enforcement it's a whole ordeal. We gotta sit down with our department heads and the union and have a meeting. And of course everyone knows about it.
Hell I got a warning for speeding and had to go to a meeting.
That dude ended up leaving on his own accord after he switched hours so we wouldn't cross paths. Just talk that shyt back to them and give them all the rope they want to hang themselves. They'll publicly expose themselves and when they make a big enough fool of themselves and there witnesses all you have to do when you have your meeting with hr or whatever is say "well xxx and xxx were watching, he was saying xxxxxx, and I said xxxxx then he just went off." Then they pull in xxx and xxx and ask their sides of the story and at the end of the day there's some shyt thats just inexcusable.

Exactly what I keep saying on here in these situations. Most of the time the crackers that do shyt like this have fuked up lives at home. All you got to do is hit them with words initially and they will fuk themselves. They aren’t expecting you to say slick shyt back. They will rage out and hit you and that’s when you fuk em up good. I get you, it's kinda like on a fast break in Basketball. If you're gonna foul the shooter and give away the FT, then foul him hard and force him to the line. Don't give up a half-ass foul and let him score and give up the And 1.
However, this is a lose-lose situation honestly. A mush in the face isn't "your money's worth" but it can still be seen as assault. If you do go all out and really beat ole dude, then you're now looking at a formal assault charge and possible court date.
I think OP should have just gone straight to HR. His colleague's mind has already been made up on how he views blacks.
