So is this what the sequel to “Illmatic” was destined to sound like before Nas hit up Trackmasters?

Wasn't Deja Vu originally recorded for the Clockers soundtrack but got cut. I remember the producer mentioning that. Also The Fugees record a track with Salaam Remi called Project Child also for that soundtrack but it got cut as well. Salaam spoke on it.

Chris Winston - Yes I produced Deja Vu. It was well after Illmatic when Nas started working on It Was Written. He wrote the lyrics to Deja Vu with me then ended up using the 1st Verse on Raekwon's joint.

Canns - So how did the opportunity come about for you to get involved with working with Nas?

CW - I started working at Sony Music Studios in NYC as an assistant. I had been producing hip hop for a while already and I started to play my beats for artists after their sessions. Nas was working on something called Black Velvet I think and after the session I told him to check out a beat I was working on. This wasn't Deja Vu but another track which we ended up recording and never finishing. He was hyped and came back a couple months later to the new Hip Hop studio they had built in the basement. He saw me in there and started asking about my beats and wanted to hear more so I played him a bunch more and he was feeling Deja Vu and this other beat like crazy. Faith Newman was the chick from Columbia and he told her to set something up for us to record.“

One big what if I have from the IWW era is what if Big Stretch didn't get killed how much more heat would they would've came up with. Stretch produced arguably 2 of the top three tracks of the album

Imagine Nas on this beat by Stretch

Good thing he went more commercial because he would've headed right into "dusty land" maybe he goes barely gold again in real time if even that. I am not a fan of "Illmatic: like that anyway GOAT album of hip hop my ass
So what are the GOAT albums?

Marley Marl was WASHED in 96. His last hits were with LL in the early 90s. He dont have a single production credit from 95-96. Nas did what he had to do at that point. The Marley Marl sound was fading and the Trackmasters were the next big thing. You cant get bogged down in rap because at that time rap moved fast and it was out with the old in with the new.

You think On The Real and True Dialect sound washed? LA LA? The LOTUG albums? :why:

Pretty sure Marley's issues were drug related, not sound.

I'm not gonna get in a back and forth just cause I don't fukk with Illmatic like that. I was a 16 yr old in Texas when that album came out. It was not a blip on my radar whatsoever. Then finally hearing it as an adult I still cant get with it. Ppl just don't wanna believe that ppl didn't fuk with Nas like that at the time. Hence why it only went gold in a time where big numbers were being done regularly elsewhere . Even my GOAT Scarface had a platinum album in 94. Outkast came out and went platinum in their rookie year. Snoop was killing the game with mult-platinum sales. Biggie came out as a rookie and went double platinum. I seriously never heard K-104 I'm Dallas play a single Nas song until If I ruled the world dropped in 96
