So is this what the sequel to “Illmatic” was destined to sound like before Nas hit up Trackmasters?

Above the fray.
They played this song a lot on Hot 97. I think Marley had a show on the station at the time that was similar to his old show on BLS.

Never heard that he was going to let Marley produce his second album, and would like to see/read him saying it.

The story is that for all the acclaim for his first album , he didn't see much money. Was heavily bootlegged, Nas wasn't a great performer and QB goons ruined promotional shows and in-stores.

He signed with Steve Stoute, and told him to " Show me the MONEY!!!"
The A&R decisions on album two were directly made to sell more records and appeal to wider audience. Lauryn Hill on 1st single, etc

Lemongrass, cherries, alkaline water
Obvisously I'm not talking about the discussions in the actual thread nor was a suggestion they don't have one.

Most of the talk outside of the albums threads is his old shyt.
How many threads do you realistically expect to be made? nikkas talk about the album in the album thread and its “look at all the posts they got in there :lolbron: “ nikka makes a hypothetical thread regarding an old song he comes across and its “how come they aint talking about the new shyt :lolbron: “. Board loves complaining about and policing Nas fans

Trackmasters and Stoute did a great job - the boom bap tracks were harder than Illmatic, the whole album was more philosophical and mature, and also had some big hit singles that were radio ready but still true Hip Hop joints.

The mafioso thing was just a bit of extra flavor, he wasn't really pretending to be a gangster or whatever people in this thread said. He was there at the start of that wave anyway because Nas Escobar originated from OB4CL. He was able to take on multiple perspectives over IWW and make them realistic. It was still mostly street themed.

I don't think it would have helped having Marley involved. Not like it would be wack but it would have set his career back. He might have had a career like O.C., who's dope but deserves a bigger fanbase. If you can make just a few great singles that goes a long way to giving you options in your career.

Would've been an extension of an era sonically because things changed over the next 2 years and Hip-Hop took on a more modern sound

This album concept discussed in this thread seems like a boom bap bible

He didn't sound confident on IWW.
Verbal Intercourse was perfect for him sonically, IWW got too much treble if my ears not failing me.
RZA's sonic palette and Marley Marl's production fit Nas' register.
He's better over mid and lower EQ beats. If I Ruled the World was a great lead single.
Could have taken some songs produced from Trackmasters, kept some Marley Marl beats and expand his sonic palette with the RZA.
Follow Illmatic with core producers: Trackmasters, RZA, Premier, Marley Marl, Rashad Smith...
All he had to do was get better beats and improve his pen. He didn't have to go the mafioso route.
IWW was a good album, I don't think he had a guide in his circle to help up with a strong follow up that wouldn't polarize his fanbase.
When IWW dropped, a strong follow up meant mainstream.
If he dropped a IWW album in '99 and stayed doing features after this second album, he would have been better for it.
Probably wouldn't even have to beef with Jay.

“Illmatic drop it was so ahead”

U can’t go from a innovator to a follower with no push back

Nas wasn't really following anyone with the mafioso, drug stuff. G Rap was on that before but Nas really brought it back:

He dropped the Nas Escobar persona before Rae did the Wu Gambinos. Raekwon wasn't doing all the coke, mafia, drug talk on 36 Chambers. All of this was on 1995 and Nas was out the gate doing that style before his contemporaries. Cuban Linx didn't come out until August 1995. He didn't follow anyone with that style.

What songs on It Was Written was drug lord raps? Street Dreams has some drug talk but the rest of the album was project street shyt minus the few commercial songs.
