i really dont think stern is wrong here... popavich knew this was a nationally televised game, he could have rested them against orlando, got a W, and then been ready for the heat. or he could have rested two against, orlando, two against miami. he did not have to do it the way he did. this is a marquee matchup that people wanted to see. you have to remember this game is for the fans. this is different than resting at the end of the season because that is usually when positioning is set and you want to rest/not risk injury for key players and fans understand that.

Stern isn't wrong for disagreeing with Popovich's methods. I think most people around the league and most fans disagree with the methods but since Popovich is who he is and he's had a lot of success, we understand why he does it and have no grounds to do anything beyond voicing our disagreement.

I keep hearing people use this line about the guy who saves up his hard earned money to see the Spurs and then goes to the game and doesn't see any of his stars but how many Spurs fans are there in Miami? How many are there anywhere outside of the San Antonio area? Furthermore, anyone who is a Spurs fan is probably just fine with Popovich doing that. And who hasn't seen Duncan and Parker play before?

It's a lot of complaining about nothing. Out of the 1200 games or whatever it is that are played each year, this situation affects 20 or 30 of them and 90% of those are in the last week of the season.

I think the fans in that arena were entertained by what they saw last night :manny:

This wouldn't happen if Pops did it against the Magic. Too much gray area for Stern make this a punishment. It was a DNP coach decision. Stern can't get mad.

He doesn't condone the Spurs being on TV at all if you read Woj's article.

You're missing the point. First of all, staggering their rest periods defeats the purpose of resting them at all. He wanted that extra day for everyone to be rested. Pop woulda did that shyt to a locally blacked out game at Charlotte if that's how the schedule was. National game or not, Stern is compromising how Pop does his job and that's messed up. Now you know what Pop will do? Deactivate two of them and play the others less than a minute the next time he feels like doing this. Then what? Stern's gonna make Pop have a minimum amount of time for them on the floor? Ypu may as well tell Pop to stay home on nationally televised games since he can't do what he feels is necessary for his team.

Lastly, Pop doesn't give a damn about his positioning. He'll make the playoffs anyway, with a high seed. This wasn't Golden State or Minnesota or Milwaukee who need every win they can get to make the playoffs. The Spurs aren't a fringe team. They'll get in. It's what they do once they're there that concerns Pop.

and what's the cutoff point for when a "late season game" is? When I clinch a playoff berth? A Division? Home court? The conference? The league?
Stop it @tremonthustler1
Pop was just being a prick . He could of rested them in the Monday game and still got 2 days off . He did on a nationally televised game to prove a point that's all:leostare: he even made a big deal bringing it up he couldnt have made a excuse or something? you can't spit in nba television partners like that its the beginning of the season and they have a light schedule coming up !!!

2 games off for who? For Miami or Memphis? He wanted the Memphis game.

But let's say he even decided to do it then. Would it really make you feel better?

Even better, would you have felt better if they were there and either got benched super early or worse, played but half-assed it? Then what would you want? A minimum of 30 mpg from each player? I don't think Pop cared whether that game was on network TV, cable, or public access. He just wasn't gonna use them on that night and that was his choice, a choice only one person seemingly had an issue with and that was Stern himself. Pop could be the biggest prick in the world. At the end of the day, the risk/reward solely falls on the team. He's down for it. The owner's down for it. The GM and players are down for it. Why do they still need Stern's approval to do their job the way they see fit?

thats not really the point though

What IS the point then? Who is really upset they didn't get to see Duncan/Ginobili/Parker play last night? People that wanted the Heat to have a better chance of losing? Spurs fans accept this practice. Heat fans got to see their team win. NBA fans got to see a close game. I don't see who lost out in all of this.

I'm hearing so many people say that he should have rested players on different days or against a weaker opponent or whatever but if these nationally televised games are all that matter, why are they even scheduling all of the other shyt?

It's going to get real tricky at the end of the season then. There is a lot more riding on those games and if one team makes the playoffs just because New York had their spot locked up already and mailed in their last few games, will they face a fine for that?

Someone needs to smack this fakkit

DALLAS -- Mark Cuban believes the NBA was "absolutely" right to heavily fine the San Antonio Spurs because the Dallas Mavericks' owner considers protecting relationships with national television partners one of the league's top priorities.

Look, I respect the Spurs. Pop is the best coach in the league. I understand why he did it. I might even take the fine if it was us, but I understand why the league (fined the Spurs). It maybe should have even been higher, because the amount at stake is enormous.
