Goten could've been a direct reflection of Goku while Gohan was his own person. I think Trunks and Goten should be stronger than all the Gods in the end.

I've seen this thrown around for so many years and I honestly don't know where it comes from exactly, but I also can't understand why even if true it is still relevant 20 years later into the series?

The only thing I can imagine what happened is that there was a dumb Shonen Jump character popularity poll after the Android Saga Chapter was released in Japan and Goku was still more popular than Gohan and Toriyama was like "Welp, the people have spoken..." And that was that.

I almost want to call bullshyt on that whole story and Tori just used it as an excuse because he didn't like Gohan as much as he loved Goku. Goku was always his anchor when it came to writing DB and I think he just didn't have the motivation to move on from him.
