Regardless, Conservatives are currently using this to exploit the Tea Party yet again. There's no indication that any mainstream GOP orgs were targeted. Furthermore, none of the scrutiny resulted in a single, actual investigation, unlike the ridiculous audits of the NAACP, Greenpeace, etc, by the IRS (partly under the same commissioner, no less) during the Bush era.

I would, if that's what we were talking about here, but again, I don't find it inherently unreasonable to scrutinize organizations that are explicitly inspired by a famous tax protest. Not a single such case produced an actual investigation, so abuse or discrimination in the context of results is out of the question, so the only possible grievance you could possibly have here never happened. No one was denied status or had it revoked or otherwise altered.

I'm surprised that I've heard several posters claim it was a tax protest, but that's only true in the sense that was about being taxed without having proper representation, i.e., being taxed without having a say. Its not like it was some libertarian tax position.

Fair point, and I'm assuming this is part of why no investigations were ultimately made. I actually agree that modern tea party orgs rarely want to do what the original one did, but when you surround yourself with exactly that iconography and rhetoric, it's bound to attract some attention, especially if you're applying for tax exempt status. I honestly think the real debate here should be whether any such political or religious orgs should be able to be tax exempt in the first place.
