This is a damn good post. Props.
Like the poster that called you into the thread, I would also point out that his “majority” consisted of conservaDems in the Senate and Blue Dog Democrats in the House. They were basically moderate Republicans.
Appreciate the compliment breh
What you wrote is 100% facts.
There's only a small group of populist / progressive Democrats in Congress. It's extremely tough to raise the funds necessary to secure a seat in the House or Senate if you're campaigning on one of those platforms. You're reliant on wealthy people who are traitors to their class (FDR style) and tiny, individual donations - no Big Pharma, FIRE, or corporate money is coming your way. You're also considered persona non grata by lobbyists - and the dirty little secret of Congress is that much of the bill-writing is done by lobbyists themselves - the budgets for individual Congressmen don't provide them enough resources to hire the staff necessary to properly write & vet legislation.
Getting anything passed that has broad-based benefits to the American public is an uphill battle off rip. If this country wasn't in the midst of an unprecedented economic depression and facing the real threat of a Communist revolution back in the 30s, there's no way we would have Social Security.
It takes a real catastrophe to bring economic & political elites to their knees - we had that, briefly, for about 1.5-2 years in the '09-'10 timeframe - and then it was gone. It will take another economic or national security crisis of similar proportions for us to have another shot at making some of the changes I mentioned.
