The wolves see these cats as prey - as a cash cow to leech off of. Its a hustle. And rap cats fall for it. Because of the lifestyle they rap about, they need the goons to be "hood certified". Plus real street dudes know whos really in the streets and who's fabricated. I'm sure behind the scenes, these rap dudes get stepped to A LOT. lol Dudes fall in the trap puttin thugs on the team, thinking that these dudes are family. But they fail to realize these goons aint really they homies. The goons look at these cats as easy doe.
Behind their backs its: "Yo these rap n!ggas is terry cloth soft. That n!gga cant even come to the hood without me. N!ggas stay testin him, gettin his chain snatched, gettin robbed. I'm bout to eat off this n!gga."
When they get around them its like, "Fam I'd catch a bullet for you. It's love over here. Anything you need - it's handled. This the team."
Problem is falling into the trap of thinking that this hood shyt is cool - its not.

Look at Pac. He said he trusted them NY gangstas...and look what happened.

Don't act harder than you are (ie soulja boy type of dudes). Not only for the fact that less nikkas will try you but because you don't have no street cred to care about and the police >>>>>> sideways holding gangsters.
And if you're acting hard, better get some army guns (T.I.) or get rich and get army guards (50 cent).

not that I know anything about this but the guys who say it's about where / who you hang out with seem to have it right. it's about your exposure profile. I mean, there's a reason nobody's extorting Elton John right. If someone tries to get all gangsta with square artists the square artist is going to call the cops, legal, bodyguards etc. the problem is these rappers don't want to be squares but rather handle street situations in street ways that's why they need 'wolves' who eventually turn on them

yea thats what I think, the g's probably weighs the risk of the situation they are getting into.
The perfect target is the one who has too much to lose by running to the cops e.g. a soft gangster rapper, drug addict, someone you got dirt on, someone with a too big ego to go to the police and on. Cali is filled with "square" celebs and I doubt that they are getting extorted, these cats go into witness protection and let the cops handle the situation.
