So are Tyler Perry's movies suspect if we know that a majority of his viewers are black?

His movies arn't good.. at all. His directing sucks.. he's made how many movies? And has yet to improve. He is the Master P/No Limit Records of Hollywood. All of his movies are formuliac

And his movies do push negative stereotypes out there as well as colorism... How many of his movies have bad or "evil" dark skin characters while the light skin characters are good, helpful saintly types.

Bull shyt, run down his movies and stop listening to the coli to formulate your opinions. Lance Gross was the bad guy in the temptation movie? Just do your own research.

What are you even talking about?
People who hate Tyler Perry don't do so because it isn't "cool"
You even said yourself you didn't like him at first. Was that because it wasn't "cool" enough for you?

In a way, his characters were corny to me and kinda embarrassing. Still are.

But you know what? I'd rather have them as the image of African Americans than what's portrayed in the music industry.:scust:

So despite the fact that a majority of his audiences are black, do those stereotypes he relies on have a negative impact, or is he simply giving his consumers(mostly blacks) exactly what they want?

I mean if this were a bunch of shyt that had a majority white audience, I'd understand the backlash.
But it's usually black people going to his plays and movies so wouldn't that technically mean that's what a particular demographic of black movie goers want?
I'm not mad. He single handedly supporting the entire black actors guild

Folks claim rap music has a negative impact on the black community. So why wouldn't the negative stereotypes from a movie have a negative impact on the community? You can make the argument that those negative rappers are giving the consumers what they want as well.

You could also argue that what Tyler Perry puts out is worse because it's disguised as something that's exclusive and helpful to that community when in reality he's bringing back old rehashed stereotypes and tropes that have been around for a long time.

SMH... What? I don't post anything BUT my own opinion. I'm not trying to shyt on TP... he makes money, good for him... but let's be honest about what he puts out. If you enjoy his movies good for you. I'm not knocking you... His movies are still shyt. You seem to think because he shows working class black folks in a few of his flicks that THAT'S good enough... but his movies are always based around some moral drama that is supposed to exclusive to the black community and he mixes it in with some preachy christian non sense as if that's the solution to every problem.

I'm not on my toes right now and I'm going off top but.... Well let's see his first flick Diary of A Mad Black Woman. The husband was a bald headed dark skinned dude who cheated/left his wife for a latina. And who was the main characters "hero" love interest? He does stuff like that in ALL of his movies and he tries to play it slick some movies and mix and match it up... like He'll have the light skin guy as the bad guy but then the love interest will be latino or something like that.

Do I even need to explain what Madea is? She's a loud, obnoxious, old black woman... played by a black man. And the movies "she" is in just so happen to be Tyler Perry's most profitable ones.

Does this say more about Tyler Perry, or us as consumers?
Do you think if we as black consumers and movie goers established that as a collective this is NOT what we want to see from our black films he would continue to make them?

I still don't care for alot of Tyler Perry stuff but I realized I was way too harsh on him. He got some goofy characters and shows but his stuff isn't c00nery at all.

Convenient how you stopped after his first movie, that's usually where his haters gather their sample size from. Tp actually depicts black men in a positive light in almost all his films. You talking that "Christian" shyt, so I'm sure you're one of those agnostic, bucking the system type nikkas.

I think his stage plays are what most are critical of.

I saw one of his plays and I have to admit, it was entertaining and funny.
I can't really say it depicts black men negatively because while the first man the leading woman was dealing with was no good, the one she met right after was (and lets face it, light skin or dark skin that seems be used in all his movies. Meet a guy, he's no good, pray, meet another guy and he treats you right)
And it was filled with that old black rhetoric of "Just pray on it"

I don't like TP's films or plays, but this dude (I forget his name) is just a representation of a wild ass uncle that can't dress, similar to Pops on The Wayans Bros.

Unless you're the one in your family that dresses like shyt, I don't see why anyone would be critical of this character, especially when it's geared towards a black audience

98% of his casts are black, so it's expected the good and bad characters will be black

Exactly.
If they're all black and it is a film(in my case a play), it's only natural to have good black characters AND bad black characters in a movie. If you choose to only focus on the negatives of the obviously bad characters then of course you're going to believe it's portraying them negatively.

Like someone else said him playing dress up like a woman is funny style.

I'm proud of a black man creating his own successful productions though.

He proved alot of people wrong about our ability to build and maintain our own filmworks.
