That Apocalypse doc was great. Learned a lot of new things and some the shyt was heartbreaking. You see these little kids all laughing and smiling, then in the next scene they’re being held in the mother’s arm and led to the gas chambers. Before that they were having folks dig their own graves before they would shoot them. Then when that wasn’t quick enough they’d have them dig wider and just have them lay on top of the already executed. Then shoot them too.

I like watching docs like this but it also shows just how fukkin evil humans are capable of being. What makes you want to attempt to eliminate an entire people from existence? Their came a part in the documentary where Roosevelt & Churchill met and made it clear, “there will be no negotiating”. Hitler had hoped to make a treaty with Great Britain, bet when he got that info he literally shyt a brick. After that they showed the Nazis no mercy. They were even planning to drop the A-Bomb on Germany but it wasn’t gonna be ready in time, so they saved it for the Japanese.

Just to add, Churchill wasn’t playing with the French. Rather than let the Germans get a hold of France’s ships, he sunk them shyts :picard: I had no idea. Also I had no idea how quickly Germany took these countries. They also showed the black French soldiers. They recorded them killing a goat to eat, they were fighting over pieces of it. They filmed as they did this and of course portrayed them as savages.

They would've lost either way, even if they attacked in May (the initial plan). German military intelligence underestimated the number of Soviet divisions and the number of Soviet armor vehicles and tanks.

Plus, Hitler thought that the Russians won't fight for a long time before giving up.

The bolded doesn't get mentioned enough, but it really needs to be repeated because the Russian winter has been brought up several times in this thread. Yes, the winter played a part in Germany's military failures, but winter doesn't discriminate. The Soviets had to deal with the same issues the Germans faced. The real problem was continuing to attack during the winter with logistics that were horribly overstretched against an enemy that it turned out wasn't actually defeated as everyone assumed they'd be.

The thought that Germany would have won the war had the invasion began earlier or if it weren't for Hitler's meddling is basically a post-war narrative by surviving German military leaders that deflected any blame for Germany's failures away from their own actions. The quick victory in France bred a reckless overconfidence in German military leaders and they grossly underestimated their opponents as a result.

Nazi Germany never had a chance of winning the sort of war they waged against the Soviet Union, which was a war of annihilation.

The Cosmos
Hitler's empire was bound to collapse anyway

one of the blessings in disguise is that Fascist/Hard Authoritarian countries regime when they're not propped up don't last as long

usually.

Somebody tell that to China. Going 80 years strong with no signs of going away

Funny how Hitler hated communism, but his actions basically gave Stalin the Baltics and whole Soviet block in the end.
The irony goes back even further. The German government is responsible for the creation of the Soviet Union in the first place, because they were the ones who snuck Vladimir Lenin back into Russia in 1917. The Bolsheviks took over and created the USSR.

Then, in 1922, Germany and the Soviet Union sign the Treaty of Rapallo, which would strengthen military and economic ties between the two. As a result of that treaty, the Germans trained and re-armed with the Russian military and shared battle concepts with them.

And then, as you mentioned, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact gave Stalin the ability to take over the Baltics and eastern Poland in 1939-1940. Germany taking over Eastern Europe and invading the USSR resulted in the Soviets taking most of East Europe (including half of Germany) during WWII and installing communist governments there during the Cold War.

So it was Germany that created the USSR, strengthened the Red Army, and eventually turned the Soviets to be the superpower Hitler wanted Nazi Germany to be.

Imagine being on one of those boats landing on beaches of Normandy
Late to this thread but the Marines fighting to take Tarawa from the Japanese was insane. Weather report got fukked up and the Attack began at low tide. Because it was low tide many of the landing crafts got stuck on the reefs so the Marines had to jump out and wade to the shore instead landing on the beach. Wading through the water made them easy targets. It took 3 days but they finally took it.
