Another reason to hate Harvey Weinstein
These days you’ve doubtless heard about the most excellent film of 2019, Joon-ho Bong’s ‘Parasite’ what you may not have known is that a film he wrote and directed in 2014, almost as well reviewed and a hit overseas and geared up to be a smash in the US was ‘Snowpiercer’
This film was going into wide release just as Chris Evans was hitting his height of popularity with ‘Captain America:The Winter Soldier.’
“According to reports, Weinstein disliked Bong’s 126-minute cut (including the ending) and demanded the removal of 20 minutes before he would release it. Weinstein relented and kept the film at its full length with original ending but decided to instead slash its distribution plan to a “limited release,” - Roger Ebert
Most people never got the chance to see it on the big screen where it needed to be viewed in order for it to have maximum impact. Snowpiercer did break records for the biggest hit in direct to streaming (as it was released as a pay-per-view at the same time it was in it’s limited theatrical run.) But it could have been HUGE. Snowpiercer was on most critics top ten of the year and was later made into a tv series.
(Which reminds me that RDJ taunted Evans about the lack of Snowpiercer’s success in the US during a recent marvel event, so, how’s it going with ‘Dolittle’ Mr. Downey?)
