how many times have i heard 'that person is black not mixed, because if a WHITE police see them they are calling them black'

or...

'they are black because if it was slavery that person would be picking cotton'

wtf? why give so much power to the oppressor to allow them to define you?
This again?

You wanna open this can of worms?

Why let a person call you black when you're brown and etc?
why get a college degree?
Why work for a white man's fortune 500 company and call yourself successful?

We need to abandon the concept of "race" all together and creating unifying labels based on shared cultural values, not matching skin tone.

But, this is the system...
this can work after black people get their house in order and on their feet for a while as a people.

That's the thing; we're trying to force people into this "house," that either; don't belong or want to be there.

Look no further than the attitude some of us have towards mixed-race blacks.

Some of us are so dense and insecure if we have an inkling they ain't Nate-Turner-down-to-kill-for-the-cause, we get upset they respect the culture and ancestry of their "other side."

Don't expect Chris (hypothetical) to hate his Asian mom and only hang with his black dad's side of the family, only identify with the community he grew up in and appreciate his culture.

We all try to fit 40+ million ppl into a small box, that we miss the point of unity.

I don't like soul food anymore and when I stop being lazy I'm eliminating meat from my diet.

Does that make me uppity, a c00n, cuz I was born in New Orleans and was raised on Gumbo?

Colon cancer runs in my family, supposedly, my uncle was just diagnosed with it and my grandpa died of it.

But, a lot of black people will see me as disrespecting our culture, regardless of the actual origin of it and it's impact on my future.

The first thing all Americans of African descent need to do; stop creating an expectation of shared values and culture because our ancestry includes slavery and we look alike. Find people we share goals and values with (spiritual, financial, community, etc.) and form a group with them.

that attitude is held by a small minority as small as the minority of militant black athiests.

Nobody is talking about fitting in a small box... we're talking about making shyt better for our communities before we go and try to change the world for everyone that's all.

Because of slavery and us looking alike we do share a lot of the same pain, values, etc... there are just different ends of the spectrum. What you're speaking on is just the extreme end of the spectrum, which unfortunately a lot of black people seem to identify with these days.

Without getting the house in order we're of no use to anyone, not out families or our friends or this planet. Family first, think about it would you abandon your family to go chill with outsiders and live it up while they live in squalor? Wouldn't you want to teach your family how to be successful so that you can go live your life and never have to worry about them?

You can't change the way your brain processes the world at an implicit level.

My point is; we haven't done it since the Civil Rights movement.

We came together en masse with a common goal and fought together, throughout the country.

Nowadays; we spend so much time trying to changed the entire group;

some of us want to be able to being openly atheist
some of us want to be openly gay
some of us think we don't have enough church
some of us think we're too Christian
some of us want to be Republican
etc, etc, etc

My only point; we can't expect all those groups (and these are only some of our differences) to put aside there differences and move forward, because we have too many different #1 priorities.

Let's get into our small groups and be cordial to one another and agree that we're different.

I won't pretend to completely understand this post; but, I feel the concept of race was created more to divide, than to unite.

We quick to come at black Christians and our "white religious, slave beliefs," but, we wasn't' "blacks, negros, ******s/nikkas" in our respective countries of origin in West Africa.

We had our own culture.

"Black" was given to us.
