I have a grad school class with an old guy who's grad parent was a slave

That's not really a lot of time.

My grandmother is 98 and literally fled slavery from the south to Ohio as a kid.

My existence was directly shaped by slavery.

There is no "forget about it" for me

The last Union Civil War vet died in in 1953 and the last slave died in the 50s (excluding Sylvester Magee).

My parents were kids then, but technically they could have known those people personally simply because they were alive to do so.

That era is closer than some folks realize.
