I believe that improv part about knowing cues and lines that Lorne mentioned because I saw a skit with Hader where he is literally mouthing Kristen Wiig line as to stay on track. May suck but it is what it is. Most of those guys are actors who go on to do bigger things while you can’t find anyone from MadTv doing anything relevant outside voice acting
Aries Spears sits on Vlad's couch and hates on more successful comedians, so there's that.

SNL is hard to watch. there was a brief time in the 80's then like 92-96 when it was funny. but i feel like that shyt was just off the sheer luck and talent. after will farell blew up and all them folks got movies like superstar and ladies man, shyt been SUPER ASS.
 92-96 being when it was funny. Everyone wanted it canceled during that time even though their roster was incredible.

The problem with SNL is they make 20 hour long episodes a year, and it's broad mainstream humor.

Sketch comedy just as a format is hit and miss, so obviously the quality is going to suffer over decades of 20 episode runs, compared to other shows that only ran for 2 or 3 seasons.

I've seen a few funny SNL sketches in recent years on youtube, but fukk watching it every week and wading through 95% dog shyt for one or two good sketches.

went on to help make a far superior sketch comedy show in in living color.

In fact every sketch comedy i've ever seen outside of SNL has been better than SNL

In Living Color
Mad TV
Chappelle Show
Key and Peele
All that
The fukking Muppet Show
I'd even give mind of mencia and iinside amy schumer the nod over snl if they wasn't stealing jokes.
These shows are taped, SNL is live. It makes a big difference.

I'd argue that what makes those shows better is because they're taped. The actors can behave more naturally while on SNL they're standing around reading from the cue cards.

Yes, I get that the show is constantly rewritten up to the day of and that Lorne is very adamantly anti-improvising, but outside of the novelty of doing a sketch of something that happened literally that day, a lot of the live SNL skits come across very awkward and stilted.

I disagree. They've had their moments. SNL would've been cancelled a long time ago if it were as bad as some people say it is.

Another SNL is terrible thread after 45 years being on air:wow:

None of you nikkas keeping that same energy for The Simpsons tho. :francis:

I mentioned this in the HBO Max thread because MADtv is streaming on there, but I was watching a lot of episodes from season three, which was his first season on the show. Aries had a ridiculous amount of talent. His timing, delivery, impersonations, and overall screen presence were akin to something you'd see from a seasoned veteran, and he was only 22 at the time. They even had a couple of sketches that weren't even about anything other than letting him show off his skills.

I think he could have built a bigger name for himself, but a combination of staying on the show too long, burning bridges with people, and generally being lazy hurt his career. He's been dragging out those tired ass LL Cool J and DMX impressions since 2003. :francis:

I defend The Simpsons the same way when one of those threads pop up twice a year with people complaining about something they haven't watched for 15 years

**edit** here you go and you in that thread also:comeon:

I know. I saw that show at it's peak. I just want them to bow out gracefully.
