Facts. SNL is terrible, and not just in an unfunny way either; a lot of the sketches have this awkward and stilted element to them too and I can't put my finger on to why that is. I've only ever laughed at a few SNL sketches before but they were so forgettable that I wouldn't be able to name them.

Mid doesn't equal never been funny or not funny since the 90s, people just forget
everyone was saying the 90s Chris Farley era sucked back then because it wasn't as funny as the Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Eddie era and now those Farley skits like the Chippendale or Van Down by the River are legendary
The same thing happened with the Will Farrell era
its a continuous cycle of "its not better than what i grew up with" that we go thru with movies, music, toys, etc
recently, everyone was laughing at the Black Panther potato salad skit for months
dikk in the Box is legendary

Bill Hader was always funny on SNL

Rather, Lorne has commented that improv does not gel with the live nature of the show. Specifically, if an actor improvises a line without warning they can throw off the timing and placement of the other performers. Every line has a specific camera cut linked to it and if the sketch performers aren’t in the right places, the planned shot will be missed and it cannot be fixed. Producing a live show means walking a tightrope between complete disaster (you can’t redo a live show) and greatness; and in order to produce the best show possible, Lorne Michaels feels that it is essential to cut out the ad-libbing and the improvising even if it means hamstringing a performer’s strong suit.

most of them have an improv background and that's part of sketch comedy, especially given people often fall out of character laughing during skits. furthermore, it seems like being in the right place >>> improving lines as far as successful filming.

I believe that improv part about knowing cues and lines that Lorne mentioned because I saw a skit with Hader where he is literally mouthing Kristen Wiig line as to stay on track. May suck but it is what it is. Most of those guys are actors who go on to do bigger things while you can’t find anyone from MadTv doing anything relevant outside voice acting

Damon is a low key GOAT. His run in the 90s is slept on.

He's naturally one of the funniest comedians ever too. Just in regular conversation. If you watch his interviews he will have you cracking up even when talking about 100% serious topics. Earthquake is someone like that as well.
