No you don't need to run a cable. I do it because I don't trust my wireless reception for online gaming even though my room is fifteen feet from the living room router.
I've never really used the Xbox 360 like that but I'd say the PS3 makes a killer media station. I use PS3 media server software to run media files from my computer so I don't have to move or copy files and even if I want to copy files I can do that through the PS3 while the server is up.
The PS3 can read an external hard drive as long as it's in FAT format. PS3 can't read NTFS.

Xbox has more apps for streaming (ESPN, HBOGo and some others), but PS3 allows you to stream all of it's stuff without a subscription.
I stream video to my PS3 from a PC, I don't even use an external really.

Got the newest one in june/july and its already freezing and restarting itself and they're giving me the runaround. And the warranty for this one is only 1 year

You probably made up your mind because of 1 of 2 reasons.
1.) You had console loyalty from the ps2, and you just assumed the ps3 would lead the way this gen. Plus you ate all the bullshyt sony said
2.) Your broke as fukk, and so paying anything for online gaming is a HUGE turnoff. Even if the service is better and more robust options/features because of it. Nope, paying anything is not worth it. All the new Arcade titles, TV options, Online content first, better made games. Nope, to save $35 there I'll take a shyttier experience

The xbox has only further pushed that lead up this year, wii has fallen off totally
