I’ve read up on it a little and I don’t know if it’s as cut and dry. A tigress is just about always gonna give a lioness that work.

Male lions have the mane that gives some jugular protection and their social order is based on combat with other male lions. They even grow up mock fighting as playing. So the male leader of a pride basically spent his youth training and spent his adulthood killing/dominating other battle hardened Lions. He might not have faced something as powerful, fast, flexible as the tiger but he’s coming into this much more experienced in this kind of fight and they aren’t all that different physically. Definitely makes it a much more interesting question.
