So you dont forsee the future of AI being very bright then is that what im gathering from this statement? My understanding is that one day AI will be able to mimic the human brain and all of these other lofty aspirations? You're saying this isnt possible with this post i believe.

At the end of the day we're the ones programming the AI... Unless we can find a way for something to organically learn on its own.. I don't know if thats possible at all.

Isnt the intent still based on his personal interpretation? If two men are up for attempted murder with intent to kill. What circumstances could there be that a machine would give one person less time then another.

Exactly... that's why its too subjective... it's called precedent... people have different circumstances that are similar over time and the judge has to subjectively decide whether that precedent applies to this case or whether its a totally different situation.

Read the law books and upload every case and precedence into the ai. Judges dont have every single case memorized and there are probably many precedence that can give a computer the ability to interpret the law based on the words of the law and precedences set in every case that has been ruled on, instantly. May be more fair, and balanced.

Honestly...IF the impartiality of it all could be taken out and a more "black white" type system could be put in place, perhaps quantification of "extenuating circumstances" for instance? Then sure why not?

Currently the system is broken because of prejudice. You can have two people with the EXACT SAME set of circumstances and depending onthe judge they could receive drastically different sentencing.

What's the worst that could happen?

I don't know that i'd be ready to hand over death or life sentencing to a robot though

All you have to do is program mandatory standards for all crimes and sentences. Could be determined based on age of victim, motivation of crime, number of victims. Etc.

Or just ban the death penalty.
