What's stopping more companies from going this route? if you want to offer a discount to people who preorder early then do that, don't fake like its a product that won't get made otherwise. Who didn't think Shenmue would reach 2 million dollars in a month? Battletoads would do that easily.

This reeks of a marketing ploy.
:mjlol: the dude that's making castlevania is trying to make another game and didn't get that much love what makes you think battletoads would get to that goal in a month :dwillhuh:

He got over 5 million.

With this new form of kickstarter how do i know if im funding a game that wouldnt get made without my money or if im being suckered into a 3 year pre-order for a game that has already secured funding in a back room?

Sony is officially helping with funding and development with Shenmue 3#1
It was just announced by Gio Corsi during their Live from E3 Stream on twitch. It was something to gauge interest and since it hit it's goal they are officially partnering up to help fund and develop with YS Net.

Anyone know how to get the video since the stream is still going?

Edit:

Starts around 57:10

"We're going to be partners the whole way," says Gio Corsi.

Sony Computer Entertainment is a partner with Yu Suzuki and Ys Net on the development of Shenmue III, SCE Third Party Productions boss Gio Corsi announced on the PlayStation official E3 live stream.

“Absolutely,” Corsi said when asked if Sony is involved. “First off, Shenmue III was the number one ask on the whole #BuildingTheList campaign, so when that first started, right off the bat, ‘Shenmue III, Shenmue III, Shenmue III.’ So this has been an ask for as long as I’ve been at PlayStation. And we met with Suzuki-san at GDC last year and we started the long road to try and figure out how we were going to get this whole thing made.

“We said, ‘the only way this is going to happen is if fans speak up,’ and we thought Kickstarter was the perfect place to do this. So we set a goal for $2 million and if the fans come in and back it, then absolutely, we’re going to make this a reality. So, Sony and PlayStation are definitely a partner in this game, and it’s going to be run through Third Party Productions with Ys Net. We’re going to get the game done. We’re going to be partners the whole way, and we’re really excited to see this thing come out in a couple of years.”

I don't know how this works. Could they turn around and put out public collectors editions after having people pledge hundreds in the kickstarter for them?

Sure because those same people will want the physical copy in their hands. Whether they spend just the 60 or $100+ they're gonna get people double dipping either way.

Just watch, the next thing were gonna see is a petition for physical disk. I think Sony does it regardless.

What exactly is the problem? It's safer for companies to take risks this way.

I hate to break it to people, but Shenmue 3 was a huge risk given how much money Sega had lost with the previous 2. Do you really think people would have invested the 60-90 million it is going to cost to make this game without some sort of validation from the community?

Basically without this option we would have NEVER seen Shenmue 3.

Of course they can, they can basically do whatever they want as long as they deliver what they posted on their kickstarter page.

sure, as long as those that contributed to the kickstarter get what they were promised. the 'public' collectors edition probably wouldn't have as nice/unique stuff anyway. I'm sure a lot of people are dropping $100 just to get their name in the credits

Its actually pretty smart on sony's part, instant gauge on the success of the game. Bring out a game that you can have no association with at all or totally take responsibility for if it succeeds..Basically they made a Kick starter with a 2 million goal in 2 days. That doesn't happen... like ever, it was specifically to see if it they were gonna get involved in shenmue.

"If you can get 2 million in 2 days we will back you"
