This is shady. Kickstarter is supposed to be for funding projects that wouldn't see the money otherwise, not as a poll in which money equals votes. People just spent 2 million dollars showing Sony they should actually fund the game. I'm return those people are getting overpriced trinkets.
I just bought the game for $30. I was willing to spend $60 and still will if they release a physical copy (which will probably be the case and why a physical PS4 copy wasn't listed from the start. They knew Sony would take care of that part) :yeshrug:.

I don't think it's as black and white as you put it. I think the KS was put up to gauge interest and to see if people really wanted it. I don't think Sony wanted to just throw cash down on an IP that's unproven in this day and age. That's what I think at least. Before anyone throws out the fanboy card, I'd love if Microsoft threw out a kickstarter for another Conker game.

Nothing more to say.

What's stopping more companies from going this route? if you want to offer a discount to people who preorder early then do that, don't fake like its a product that won't get made otherwise. Who didn't think Shenmue would reach 2 million dollars in a month? Battletoads would do that easily.

This reeks of a marketing ploy.

It was a marketing ploy.

But there were a lot of people that didn't think this could do more than a million on a kickstarter. This franchise has been dead for 14 years. What other way do you think they should've gauged interest? Serious question.

Of course its a marketing ploy, lol. No different than other kickstarter projects sitting on your local retailer shelves because of the interest level that it generated.

Just don't act like fans won't get anything out their money.

Not really. The way I understand it is that even though pubs know they would make money on something like this, they'd much rather fund something that's gonna make A LOT of money.

Shenmue is gonna cost a lot and even though its gotten a lot of backers, it won't sale crazy like a COD, Halo, etc.

The profits on this game will be undoubtedly low, so pubs don't want to touch it.

And y'all gotta remeber that a lot of people on kickstarter pledge more than the $60 it would cost if it was just released.

Its not like they have 2 million sales already. Some people are pledging $10,000+

That wouldn't happen if the game was just released at retail.

Which is why we'll see a number of collectors editions at places like Gamestop, Bestbuy and Amazon. Those things will be sold out in minutes with the money this fanbase is willing to spend.

I don't know how this works. Could they turn around and put out public collectors editions after having people pledge hundreds in the kickstarter for them?
