He was king from 1946 to 2016, sixty fukking years, in a country where it was literally illegal for the media to say anything negative about the king at any time or you could be placed in prison for decades. It was a total cult of personality built up around him that every Thai citizen was indoctrinated in since birth.
Whenever there was some national disaster he would publicly ask Thais to donate to the cause and then give out the donations calling it the "King's fund" as if the money came from him. Meanwhile he was one of the richest people on Earth, worth $30 billion and living in palaces, going around the world in opulent luxury, but not touching his own net wealth to help the people. His own money was the result of massive corruption stolen from the people.
Thai people who were raised since children to be brainwashed into that shyt will talk about some pro-poor people project the king did with other people's money while ignoring his own wealth.
If he was really for the people, then why did the people always vote against his proxies in EVERY election? Why did the military leaders supporting the king have to overthrow EVERY democratically elected government?
1957-1963: The ruler is accused of insulting the king. The king tells him that he must resign. He doesn't, and the military overthrows him in a coup. Martial law is declared and the new military general is appointed leader of the nation. He rules for six years and reinstitutes an ancient practice requiring petitioners to crawl when in the presence of the king.
1963-1973: A new military dictator takes charge. Anger over corruption and failed governance grew until a student uprising led to 500,000 protesters in the streets. The military attacked the students, killing at least 77 of them and injuring close to 1000.
1973-1976: The king appoints a new prime minister and assembly. Over the next three years the military secretly assassinates or imprisons many student leaders and other dissidents while shifting more and more to the right. In 1976 the students launch another major protest in response, they are attacked by the military and right-wing paramilitary forces with assault rifles and grenades. Over 100 students are killed and many more injured, beaten, and sexually assaulted. In response the king backs a military coup to overthrow the current government and take firmer control.
1976-1992: Thai government stays in constant turmoil as there are four more military coups.
1992: Elections are finally held, but under pressure the majority party asks the reigning military dictator to remain in power. That leads to massive anti-military deaths and demonstrations, which are once again suppressed by the military with hundreds of killings and disappearances and thousands of arrests.
2006: A populist leader who is seen as not a supporter of the king is elected. The minority parties beg the king to intervene. The leader is forced to resign under pressure from the king, the courts invalidate the election results, the military overthrows the elected government, and the election commissioners are jailed. Once again martial law is declared. The coup is generally considered to have been made under the orders of the king. After the coup, the military leaders declare that even foreign journalists who dare to criticize the king will be arrested.
2007-2008: A new election is held and the same party wins again. Pro-king forces stage protests across the country, including the occupation of both airports, until the courts declared that "election fraud" had occurred and forces the winning party to disband again. The pro-king minority party is placed back into power.
2009-2010: Hundreds of thousands of protesters oppose the non-elected government and demand a new election. Once again the military and police, with the tacit support of the king, put down the protests violently, killing over 90 people. However, elections are eventually held in 2011 and for the 3rd time in 6 years the party in opposition to the king wins in a landslide.
2013-today: What a surprise, pro-king military forces declare martial law and take power in another military coup. They've given up on elections, since they always lose, and just continue to rule with the same military dictator to this day.
If the king really cared about the people, he wouldn't have supported one coup after another. If he really cared about the people, he wouldn't have allowed violent suppression of protesters. If he really cared about the people, he would have allowed the democratically-elected governments to stand. If he really cared about the people, he wouldn't have kept $30 billion in net worth of the people's money and lived in opulence. If he really cared about the people, he wouldn't have allowed his sociopath of a son to be the net ruler after him.
He deserves none of the adoration he was given, but I don't blame the Thais who supported him because they'd been brainwashed their entire lives to believe he was the next thing to a demigod and it was literally impossible for them to ever hear any information against him, ever.
