the fukking thread is about chuck schumer, democrat leadership in 2018, correctly bringing up the fact that high gas prices crush the middle class. why have the democrats abandoned that message? is it not crushing them now?

It was dumb political posturing, which is not uncommon for the Democrats or any politicians. Trump was not responsible for gas prices.

Also, the claim that gasoline prices are crushing the middle class is overblown. The average American spends about $179 a month on gasoline. For comparison, the average American spend about $160 a month on their phone bill and $92/month on coffee. So simply not buying coffee would save more money than cutting gas prices by 50%, and switching to a more basic phone plan would save far more than both (I pay ~$30 a month for mine). Gas prices are only "crushing" for low-income laborers with long commutes. For everyone else, they're merely an inconvenience, which is why SUVs and big trucks have remained so popular among the middle class despite their gas guzzling habits.

is biden's message of "we're saving antarctica, just go buy an electric car" better than republicans' message of "unleash american energy, get gas prices down", in the general election?

So you think that we should give a bunch of freebies to Big Oil, fukking over our own local environment as well as the planet in general, even though it won't lower gas prices at all....solely so Democrats have a marginally better chance to win in 2024?

nah, you're right. run on high gas prices in 2024. it's a great strategy.

it's definitely not contributing to the sentiment that as much as of a shythead as trump was, people are tired of this fukkin administration. biden's 25 percent approval rating doesnt reflect that at all

this is disingenuous, schumer pointed out how trump reneging on the iran deal lead to higher oil prices. unless you know of a way for biden to force oil companies to increase domestic production of oil to lower gas prices than it's still an apples and orange situation.

I ain't gonna lie, gas prices have felt about the same to me pre and post Covid.
i hadnt been noticing it, but it just shot up pretty bad in a week. that chevron that was 5 last week was 5.40 today :dead:

biden just doesnt have the room to get squeezed like this. for OPEC to announce a cut, and have prices shoot up is embarrassing. republicans' line about "this is bullshyt, biden needs to unleash american energy".... there's gotta be a point where that line starts working. more people dtive cars than need abortion access :skip:

you are aware that there are thousands of oil leases that oil companies have but aren't using?

Your biggest issues outside of the war in Ukraine and supply and demands are that your state taxes more per gallon than other states and that you're neighboring California and getting the same gas formula which is more expensive.

The reality is that the companies that drill oil on American soil sell it to the highest bidder internationally. Short of nationalizing those companies allowing for more drilling won't help gas prices.

As far as messaging, shutting up about high gas prices you can't change is the best strategy when you're in charge. If you talk about things you're going to do that don't fix the problem people will blame you when they notice the prices either going up or staying the same. If you talk about the reality of why prices are high and it's not your fault you sound like you're making excuses.

Pointing out that Chuck Schumer is a hypocrite doesn't change the fact that blaming the opposition for things that aren't their fault is good strategy when they have power and will be blamed.

:dahell: is each state not rising proportionately

it's more than offset by our lack of income tax, and rock bottom property tax. thats not the issue :dead:

is there anything you're actually willing to hold biden accountable for, besides not being far left enough?

I'm not a Biden fan, I'm fairly certain I've never defended him. I hope he drops out before the month is over so a better candidate can run. That doesn't make gas prices his fault. They weren't Trump's fault when he was president, they weren't Obama's fault when he was president, etc.

Blaming gas prices on the current president or party in power is an easy take by someone that doesn't understand the details of the market. That's why the finger pointing happens on both sides when the prices are high. The president could nationalize the private companies that drill oil on our land and force that oil to stay in the U.S. but you and everyone else would call him a communist. Other than that he could allow for leases that won't produce any oil for decades and won't lower prices now, which would hurt him with his base for no gain.
