Above the fray.
His Co-Star In Selma

Carmen Ejogo, who played
Coretta Scott King in Selma, told BuzzFeed News, “I’ve been trying to convince myself that being British has had no bearing on any of this, but actually I think that’s where it served me well. I’m not as entrenched in the history so immediately. I didn’t know who Coretta was until I played her the first time. ”

This was the thing in the thread that puzzled me. I had to look up her birth year, because I thought she might have been younger than what I thought.
But ,NO, she was born in the early 70s....like I figured...and she grew up in England like I figured.

I find it almost impossible to believe that she had NEVER heard of MLK's wife before playing in the made for tv film about his life. American media travels the globe, and the MLK holiday became law in 83. If she never heard of him before or after..certainly the British media covered the birthday becoming a holiday in America. And surely they showed a picture of CSK at the funeral.

Brits reading this, am I being naive here? I always assumed that (all)people across the globe who didn't know about African Americans were at least aware of MLK, Muhammad Ali, and Michael Jackson.

That's what I'm saying.

Coretta was side by side with MLK during most of his marches.

That's the whole point of the various protests and boycotts. They`re hired specifically for their ignorance, as she and others stated.

You know what, if the individual actors who got roles just said "hey, it was an open audition and the casting people made a decision" I could rock with that. Majority of them aren't household names where you could point to the casting decision as one made with box office or opening weekend in mind. An individual beating out others in auditions just means they fit the picture of what the role was, in the eyes of a decision maker.

This other stuff I'm hearing, where they cite their ethnicity and detachment from the character as a plus? I think that's bull and painting themselves into a trap. I respect the craft of acting, but at the end of the day they are reading lines from a written script.
"I'm playing the character differently than a person from that culture would" HOW??

***And I'm still calling BS on any person her age from England claiming to not have known who CSK was.The average white British soccer houligan her age has seen an image of King with CSK or her image at his funeral at least once in life.

"HOW?" The guy who played MLK said it perfectly: 'they're unshackled from our history.' :mjpls:

They're not painting themselves into a corner, they'll do quite well with this technique. White people love it when you promise to never bring up their sins.

I would think most would know her more for the funeral photo.

When they show clips of the marches and speeches, she's usually not there. Most people know that Winnie Mandela existed even if they couldn't recognize her in a photo. I might be the most naive person alive, but I won't accept that Carmen didn't know who MLK's wife was.
I think it's some pretentious acting mumbo jumbo that she came up with after the fact

"I was a blank slate, I created my interpretation from scratch...I didn't even know who she was"
