Which parts were dramatized is what im wondering

I was watching it with my shorty who did a bunch of reports on madam in grade school as well. The lightskin rival and a$$hole husband was real. Crazy bytch really followed Walker across the country to compete.

Definitely lots of real drama to pull from, im surprised this wasnt made earlier

Edit: read the link from the article you posted. Interesting changes they made for drama purposes. It sucks they relied on these shytty cliches when they could have went higher. Wish a black person with some damn pride would be in charge of these projects for once

The lady in the rivalry wasn’t light skinned in real
Life according to the great great granddaughter and the men being the negative factors in her life were highly exaggerated. CJ Walker credited the men in her life (especially her brother) for being a strong presence and influence in her life. All the overly dramatic male-female conflicts didn’t play out as such. Her daughter wasn’t a lesbian. They completely left out the details of her business acumen and the intricacies of how she navigated the scene - set up her stores, the legal issues, business environment and relationships etc

Movie is pure trash. Tiffany Haddish ruined it. Wowww they dropped the ball on telling the REAL version of her story and glossed over pertinent details. They emasculated the fuk out of her husband. And had to make it a hateful competition element between two black females that wasn’t even true. They just had to insert the lesbian agenda into this that no one asked for. Blair Underwood was the best thing about this movie - I guess Octavia is the “face” of everything now - as if no other older black actresses exist. Another fail attempt at telling a very important and historically accurate portrayal just like “Harriet”. Disturbing to see and the end result when the story gets in the wrong hands. No disrespect to your opinion though. Just mad at the outcome.

With the whole lightskinned vs darkskin angle, I honestly thought white people wrote the script, after I finished the series I checked who the screenwriters are and they are 4 black women.


There are so many factual inaccuracies in this series. Annie was not biracial, she was a lightskinned black woman.
That whole phone call with her black mother. Dialogue was " you have light skin like massa and good hair, you will be fine". WTF??

The whole lesbian angle. Why must faggorty be included in every fukken thing on netflix?
She wasn't even a lesbian in real life.
Every black man is evil except the lawyer guy.

I was on part 3 and was like there is going to be a white man savior right?

Then it sort of happened with that owner of the 10 cent store, he didn't even want to hear her business proposition, he just accepted her on the stop. (Like that ever happens in real life LOL).

Imagine if a young black girl watches this, she is not going to get an accurate representation with this bullshyt.

Facts on everything you said . Except note that “4 black women” are accountable to their white handlers, check their history- it’s like hiring 4 Gayle King’s - there’s a reason why One Tiffany Haddish was casted more than Nia Long (who mind you, would have executed that same role flawlessly) these days. Do the math on that.

They purposely put out movies like this for mass appeal and to appease a wider audience; to distort the narrative for those who are not knowledgeable. Same reason why Zoe Saldana is cast as Nina Simone, Oprah tried to push her Neverland series, Same minds behind that failed portrayal of a “Harriet” movie and the push behind movies like Wrinkle in Time , Hidden Figures with the white savior , god complex. Just like we are supposed to believe a lone white man lead a slave revolt in ‘Free State of Jones’ bc black men weren’t capable?? Nahhh, they stay trying to rewrite our history in the most convenient book of ways . I won’t let my daughter see this - if I want accuracy; I’ll read a book and break it down on her level, have her read a book when she’s old enough to understand the nuances or watch a documentary that actually has facts not false imagery, to make everyone “feel good” and less oppositional toward the real culprits.

I’m tired of the fakery and the stereotypes. Compare that to a movie like, The Banker - that was more accurate and less condescending than this piece of refiltered mass produced mental manipulation. There’s a reason why “The Banker” is not getting much attention - they even tried to prevent it from being released - white man isn’t made to seem like the good guy or hero in this and the black men are shown as family oriented, smart at finance and economics, who acquired their wealth by outsmarting their white “peers”- Samuel Jackson and Anthony Mackie bodied their performance without all the shuck and jive haddish antics . No faggitry or emasculation going on either .
