Why does it matter if he’s a robot or cursed soul? It’s gonna kill and talk no matter what.

I would say that what made him a classic character was his deranged adult personality trapped inside a kids doll. It was the juxtaposition of such an innocent looking toy having not just murderous intentions, but the mouth and mannerisms of pychopathetic felon. A malfunctioning robot's shyt talking I doubt would have the same effect. "fukking bytch," being exclaimed by Charles Lee Ray trapped inside a Good Guy Doll has that certain panache that a robot can't recreate
