I love the show, but I don't really mind this. I've always seen cats treat this like it was going to cover every and anything gangster oriented in this time period and knew they were setting themselves up for disappointment. There isn't a main character, but Nucky was kind of the linchpin of the whole series. Every season you see cats asking for more of NY, or Chi, or Chalky, seemingly missing that they were important to the story through their interactions with Nucky. Expecting the show to be an Encyclopedia Mafioso was always gonna lead to these reactions. That said, there's a ton of material from that time period for other series in the future, but I wouldn't expect any connections to Boardwalk Empire.
